Anybody else get this happening to them? People will move right in front and the guy with close combat will not shoot at all even though its within 4 spaces.

I think he can your unit can only react once per phase. So if your unit already fired a reaction shot during the enemies turn, he/she wont be able to do it again until your turn begins again and vice verso. By phase I mean your turn or the enemies turn.

Ah okay but what happens if it was just a long range reaction shot? Will that still use up the close combat shot?

Actually I heard it only activates when an enemy crosses the border into that four space range around your solider. Not sure if that's true but seems accurate as far as I've seen

    Hey Ninja.

Close Combat Specialist will become inactive if your guy has already fired an overwatch shot.

Unless something was patched since last I played, that is not correct. I had a soldier with an alloy cannon on overwatch. A berserker broke cover and began moving toward someone else. My guy took a shot via overwatch. The berserker was hit and rushed him. His close combat activated and he took another shot.

This is correct, overwatch and the close combat reaction shot are independent of one another.

Rule 1. I am always right.
Rule 2. If in any case I appear wrong, refer to rule 1.

Do you have a link to confirm this? As all i could find was, that overwatch did effect it. But nothing official.

I don't mind if I'm wrong as long as someone helps out Ninja.

I don't have a link but personal experience has shown that you can get the shot on overwatch, multiple times in a turn on both the same enemy and different ones (though the same enemy is very rare and only seems to happen if they take a second move action inside the radius), and sometimes just never at all.

However the ability is supposed to work it's a bit glitchy in general.

I think it only activates if they move within range, leave, and then return. For example, if they were to move within range, hunker down, and then move again while still within range, I don't think it activates. Only when they "break the border," not "every time they take an action while already within it."

I always take CCS for my assault goons, but never rely on it because I am honestly never sure when it's going to activate. It usually activates when an enemy crosses the magic 4-tile threshold, but not every time. So I never rely on it and consider it a bonus if/when it does activate.

I took down a Beserker in one turn because my guy kept taking close combat shots for every square/tile/however you wanna call it the beserker went through. 3 straight shots. Only did it once though.

My experiences agree with this statement. My last playthrough's best soldier was an assault and sometimes it felt like this ability wasn't activating, but I realized that she had already taken the shot as the enemy first approached her, it just didn't activate as the enemy made consequent movements within the 4 'tile' range.

Obviously the tip to take away from this is, if your CCS perk fires off, then make sure to reposition your assault out of close range from that alien so the shot can be activated again if said alien attempts to close the distance again. ;O What needs to be tested though would be, does it only activate if an alien first breaches your space, or if it can activate if you first approach an alien, then hunker down, then that alien moves while within the space. It would still count as a first movement within range for that enemy but since they weren't the one to physically pass through some invisible barrier, makes ya wonder.
