Team 17 revives Alien Breed

Classic Amiga title to get Unreal Engine next-gen makeover; will only be available via download.

Despite the current generation of consoles offering up gaming experiences that could only have been dreamed about in the early '90s, many gamers still have a soft spot for the games they grew up with. Several titles have already been rereleased on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network. Some, such as Duke Nukem 3D and Sensible Soccer, have been ported in their original incarnations, while others, such as Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix and Bionic Commando, have been given a full makeover.

Now, Team 17 has announced that the Amiga classic Alien Breed is returning as Alien Breed Evolution and has released a set of screenshots from the new game. Launched back in 1991 on the Amiga and then later on MS-DOS PCs, the game was a big success for the company spawning several sequels. Alien Breed took inspiration from Ridley Scott's Alien and saw gamers take on the role of a lone marine, fighting against the alien horde in 2D top-down action.

The Worms maker has promised the new game will be a "drop-dead gorgeous retro-modern remake" and will be powered by the Unreal3 engine. There will be a single-player and co-op modes, though it's not clear whether the cooperative play will be local or online. While the game will only be available via download, Team 17 has not yet confirmed what platforms it will be released on.

Only download? Well, that's killed it for me then. I was a huge fan of the Alien Breed games in the 90s. If the remake had been retail and disc-based, I would have bought it...

if it has split screen coop and a decent length or at least excellent replay value i will definiatly buy it (split screen is the only reason to play console shooters imo

    Ahh the joys of youth...

Clearly not old enough to remember the sheer quality of AB - you both shared the same screen and had to stick close - the screen only followed the red player as I remember.

How about reviving it in 1st or 3rd person. I'm tired of re-developed games in traditional styles. This game would succeed much better with the above proposal.

Psygnosis? What, are you trying to pull a "Shadow Of The Beast" remake on me thenephariouson?

If so, I'm sold. I'm also one of those poor 30-year old souls who grew with Amiga games, and Psygnosis was one of my faves.

The Turrican series was also a big spot in my heart back then. Pity that Rainbow Arts never gave Factor 5 the rights to make Turrican games. Not that it matters now that they're bankrupt...

Team 17 used to be one of those jewels in the game scene back in the golden days of Amiga, that used to churn out hit game after hit game. I used to own all of their games (still own the soundtracks, recorded on tape from within the games), and I loved them unconditionally.

And then they made Worms. And it was a great game. And I loved them even more. And then they made Worms 2, which was even better. And then there were more Worms, and more, and some MORE! And then, after 100 or so sequels, I got bored by it all and was like, 'C'mon, people, make something NEEEWWW!' (it was a bit diminishing for a game giant such as themselves to develop a single game over and over again for 15 years!).

And then they made a new game. And I regreted my wish. For it was none other than that god-awful dung of a game, Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust. I was honestly shocked when I saw it in those 'legal' movies before the game. It said 'Developed by Team 17'. I really couldn't believe it! Well, I couldn't believe TWO things, really - first, that they FINALLY made something other than Worms, and second, that they made THAT game!

Let's just hope it was a misfortunate fluke, rather than their 'best shot' (let's face it, this Team 17 is no longer the same company that we used to love and cherish 2 decades ago), and that they'll 'clean up their act' with this new Alien Breed Evolution game...

The imagination of todays developers is simply not as rich as the devs back in the days of the Amiga / Atari ST. Im just getting tired of Generic FPS after Generic FPS. Although i do think that some devs are finally realising this with games like Shadow Complex, etc and the influx of 'Retro games' which kind of reinforces the point that they are running short on ideas. My opinion obviously.

pilot_riaz, you just reminded me about Project X. That was even harder than Alien Breed, but god damn I couldn't stop trying :-) Hope they do a remake of it at some point, and hopefully Assassin too.

Loved this when i was younger, i had Alien Breed : Tower Assault for the CD32, never did finish it! damn tough. I hope they would include the original game in there somewhere too

As with pilot_riaz I would like to see Project X remade but also Superfrog, one of the best platform games on the Amiga.

Not sure why people are mentioning Bitmap brother games, doubt Team 17 can remake those :/ in general though i always want to see more Amiga games remade, my dying wish is for Super Skidmarks to be done

Remember Project X by Team 17 on the Amiga? That was an awesome side scrolling spaceship game. During development they said they were going to push the Amiga to it's limits and they clearly did. Glad Team 17 are still around, decent developers.
