Kingdom Under Fire II goes massively multiplayer

Blueside bringing true sequel to action-real-time-strategy hybrid to PC and consoles with a targeted 2009 release window.

The Kingdom Under Fire real-time strategy series has always incorporated action and role-playing game elements, dating back to its 2001 inception on the PC. With the Xbox 360 release of Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom earlier this month, the developer went so far as to drop the RTS focus and crank out an action-RPG instead.

Now the franchise is set to embrace an even more convoluted genre description. Developer Blueside today announced that it will be taking the series back to its action-RTS roots with Kingdom Under Fire II, but it's also adding something new. The game will be the first example of a new genre the developer is dubbing Massively Multiplayer Online Action Real-Time Strategy, or MMOARTS.

Kingdom Under Fire II's new MMO mode will allow thousands of gamers to meet in "siege battles of epic proportions," according to Blueside. Both its multiplayer and single-player campaigns will feature a new storyline in which the balance of power between the Human Alliance and the Dark Legion is upset by a third faction bent on world domination.

With an anticipated 2009 release window, the game is being made for worldwide release on the PC and unspecified consoles. Blueside is codeveloping the title with Phantagram, but no publisher has been announced yet.

Kingdom Under Fire was by far my favorite game on the Xbox, Live was just so fun. When Circle of Doom arrived I was very disappointed that they had stepped away from the mass war scale of KUF. But now it has returned and sounds VERY intreging I will be sure to keep an eye on the progress of this game

Man the graphics have come a long way... if they keep the same basic playing style, then I will eat a kitten in front of a PETA meeting to get this game once it comes out.

Well previous comments here are pretty saddening or at least not encouraging, but i will still say it - IT'S ABOUT TIME THEY MAKE A HUGE MASSIVE ONLINE STRATEGY GAME No ponnies and dressing up your elfs, but something really huge, with huge battles, resources, castles n stuff!

this isn't savage 2 you fight and lead simultaneously, imagine a game with dynasty warriors combat for your general unit, then simple action strategy elements that let you control your army in real time.

    Is it another savage 2?
Look like the concept is quite same to savage 2.

Unfortunately, for those of you who think this is a new genre, it really isnt. It's been done before on the PC.

That being said, maybe it's a new genre on the consoles, shrug.

i did not like CoD i went as far as trading the game for folklore but now that it going back to it roots now that what i am talking about

The kingdom under fire series (prior to CoD) is much beter than dynasty warriors, the original games were the best RTS a console has ever seen, it did have dynasty warriors action elements but at its heart it was pure tactical war rts.

With some of the most punishing difficulty of any video game I have played.

Go read the very positive gamespot reviews on this site regarding Heroes/crusaders because CoD was just a lame game using the character liknesses of KUf, it wasnt a kingdom under fire game as far as I am concerned

KUF never sparked my interest, seemed like another Dynasty Warriors, but this being MMO....huge battles...idk, i might check it out at least, but no promises.

This is ludicrous already. They went from RTS, to crappy RPG now to this? Count me out.
