Tony Hawk's Proving Ground Update

Activision and Neversoft show off a bit more of the latest evolution in the Tony Hawk series.

Prove Yourself

Brian Bright gives you an inside look at Tony Hawk's Proving Ground.

Although skateboarding is now an accepted genre in video games, the notion of an entire franchise being built around the sport seemed crazy back in 1999. That didn't stop Activision and Southern California-based developer Neversoft from releasing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for the original PlayStation. The gamble paid off handsomely with the rare mix of critical and commercial success you don't see that often in games. The ensuing years have seen the trailblazing game evolve to incorporate different gameplay and story elements that have helped the franchise cement its pioneer status. Despite the various accolades the game has received, Neversoft isn't one to rest on its laurels, and the upcoming Tony Hawk's Proving Ground offers some intriguing tweaks to the franchise's formula. At a recent press event, Activision and Neversoft offered a presentation to show off more of this promising entry, the ninth in the venerable series.

Neversoft approached the game with three key tenets, customization, personalization, and freedom, which have served to inform Proving Ground's development. As a result, the game will feature an expansive single-player mode that lets you shape your own rise to stardom. You'll work your way up from obscurity by skating on through the ranks of hopefuls in events spread out through three cities. Your road to awesomeness will be paved with a variety of new competitions that will test your skills and show off Neversoft's refinement of the classic Tony Hawk control scheme. The team is continuing its exploration of new ways to let players express their skills via extensions of the dual-stick trick mechanic introduced in last year's Project 8. This year's game will feature a bevy of new uses that not only offer what appears to be an unprecedented amount of freedom for players, but some pretty cool mechanics to boot.

Proving Ground's presentation is shaping up quite nicely, offering a refinement of the work Neversoft's been doing on the series. The character models are detailed and motion-captured to offer the game's cast a sharp look. The environments are on par with the impressive work done in the previous games, offering a bit more detail in places and a great sense of scale. In addition, the game will include a video editing feature that will let you splice together clips of your hottest tricks. The various camera filters and effects that can be brought into play in the video editing appear to be pretty robust. From what we saw, it seems entirely possible to stitch together your own slickly produced, YouTube-worthy video.

Audio in the game is taking the same approach as the last few games. You can expect to hear a hefty chunk of dialogue along with the traditional array of effects. In addition, the game will feature an eclectic mix of songs that run the gamut from the expected skater tunes to more diverse territory.

Based on what we saw, Tony Hawk's Proving Ground is shaping up to be a strong entry in the series. The core gameplay appears to be expanding in some interesting places, and the various customization elements hold a lot of promise. Though we weren't able to try the game yet ourselves, we're anxious to see how Neversoft's new take on its classic series goes. Tony Hawk's Proving Ground is slated to ship this fall. Look for more on the game next week on our live show at E3, where we'll have Neversoft doing a live demo, and in the months leading up to its release.

i'm not going to lie i'm a big fan of the Tony Hawk games.......Project 8 new innovative "Nail the Traick" was pretty kool but i thought the game and storyline was a total 39420840 steps down from Wasteland. From what the Neversoft is saying it looks to boot all of its games out of the water

I can't wait for this Tony Hawk, ive been following it since it's page was first put up here on gamespot. all the customizing, three stories, new "nail the___ modes", video editing, and world double the size of project 8 is going to be incredible. - i was really dissappointed in Project 8's customizing options, or lack of. I am a diehard Tony Hawk fan and have been since the very first Proskater came out on N64. I own Proskater 1 on N64, proskater 2 on ps1, all the Tony Hawk games on the original xbox (THPS2x - THP8 ) and project 8 on xbox 360. I am curious about SKATE but i am going to rent it before i buy it because i am "iffy" about the control scheme. I think with the compition from SKATE proving grounds is making really smart move by adding more Nail the ____ options while keeping the oldschool controls. Anyway i am definitly buying this the day it comes out. By the way, i heard a rumor the release date is september 17th. can anyone confirm? oh and one last thing - i see a lot of you are complaining about frame rate in P8, i dont know about your discs, but my disc's (X360) frame rate ran fast and smooth constantly. the only times i ever had any lagging was during the transitions between areas. and even then, the lag was very small. and my friend's version of P8 (also X360) ran very smooth as well, just as good as mine. And so far, the only issue i see with PG is in one of the screen shots, the distant buildings look very blurry, crappy, and as if the bricks on the building some of them fused together and yeah. It just looks bad to me, especially while the graphics on everything else are top notch. i hope this is just a flaw in a semi-finished state of the game and that they will fix it before its released.

Neversoft has done a good job of balancing each successive Tony Hawk entry and improving the animations to be more realistic. Take the Casper Flip from THPS 3, you could mash on that triangle button all day and rack up crazy multipliers, but at this point, it's not nearly as effective a tool for cheapness.

SKATE is definitly going to fail. the controls for it may SEEM easy, but will turn out to be a b!tch. tony hawk games may be a button masher only to people who don't know and don't care about using the right mechanics and control. the people who properly uses the controls change the experience and can play the game however they want. Skate limits gamers to things they can only do in real life, and who wants that in a video game? skate alo forces you to learn each trick individually with its craptastic control scheme (Flickit? I say F*CK it).

I just think Activision are spewing out Tony Hawk Skater games now. I reckon SKATE is going to be a lot better, because it makes a change from the routine button bashing of THS.

If you like skate so much why dont you marry it? THPS has always been the skating game to play. Skate is going to try and then FAIL!

OMG! Now you can make TH movies! Plus that park thing they show at the end. Just blows me away that they will keep this for the PS2. Most good games now days got straight to 360, PS3, or the WII.

they dont make it more realistic because its a freakin game!!!!!!! y dont ppl get this. do u think some1 can score 81 points in 1 game ( besides Kobe) no but u can in sk no1 says nything about that. Its an arcade syle game and if they made it just real tricks every1 would hate it because its not what they know and love about the tony hawk series. they r making skate so for those of u complaining about it not being realistic go buy skate and then buy the levels and the the characters on xbox live cuz its by EA

I love Tony Hawk games and I enjoyed P8, but I can never help wondering, why don't they make it more realistic, tricks wise anyway because I havent seen that many people do a 360 Christ Air backflip off a halfpipe..
