Skate Hands-On

EA dares to tread where Tony Hawk has dominated for years. We take a first look at EA's next-generation skating game.

With the generation of skateboarding stars from the 1980s approaching middle age, it's interesting to see how the culture around skateboarding has thrived and evolved over the years. Certainly video games have had no small impact on keeping the sport of skateboarding alive, and now EA is getting into the skating mix with the upcoming release of Skate. We had a chance to check out an early build of Skate at an EA press event this week to see how EA's initial foray into the skateboarding world is shaping up.

The first thing that comes to mind when you play Skate is the long-running Tony Hawk series, and comparisons to that game are natural. However, and EA is quick to remind you of this, the developers behind Skate are striving to create a game that plays unlike any skating game you've played. Having gotten a taste of the gameplay ourselves, we're inclined to agree with them.

First, let's set the stage a bit. The game, due for release later this year, has been in the works since last year and will feature 19 real-life skate pros, such as Danny Way, Tommy Guerrero, and the truly odd Mark Gonzalez. While you'll eventually be able to skate all over a fictional city known as San Vanelona (a blend, in both name and design, of San Francisco, Vancouver, and Barcelona), the demo featured our lone grinder skating along in a near-empty skatepark. The park, an asphalt amalgam of rails, stairs, ledges, and bowls aplenty, gave us plenty of room to try out the different moves available to out skater, unobstructed by such nuisances as traffic or pedestrians. EA producers assured us that the city you will eventually skate in will be a much more active place, complete with plenty of obstacles to take advantage of (or avoid), as well as a computerized populace, which will demonstrate varying levels of tolerance for your skating ways.

From a control standpoint, Skate is very reminiscent of another EA game, Fight Night Round 3. As you might expect then, Skate relies heavily on the two analog sticks for the majority of the movements in the game. The left analog stick controls your skater's direction, and the right analog stick is responsible for the wealth of tricks you possess in your arsenal. Unlike the limited punch repertoire in Fight Night, there are a ton of tricks in Skate that you'll be able to pull off with the right stick by moving it in different directions. For example, a basic ollie is executed by pushing down and then up with the stick; you can do a nollie, essentially a reversed ollie, by moving the stick up then down. Moving the stick up and slightly to the left or right will cause your skater to perform basic kickflips or heelflips.

Skate's complexity comes from the variety of motions you can make with the right analog stick. For some tricks, you'll move the stick off at one angle then finish off by moving the stick in an entirely new angle. For others, you'll want to trace the outside of the analog stick's range of motion, which is similar to how you would pull off a haymaker punch. The idea here seems to be that a lot of different tricks are available under your right thumb. Indeed, EA had a small laminated poster on display that showed all of the different moves on the right analog stick. The key to nailing tricks is for you to be as accurate as possible with the right analog stick, though the intricacy of the controls means it will take an awful lot of practice to get the tricks you want.

Other controls in the game include the left and right triggers, which are used for grabbing the board with either your left or right hand. Interestingly, you can tweak your grab in midair by using the right analog stick for some extra variety on your trick. Manuals and reverse manuals are controlled by pulling back (or pushing forward) very slightly with the right stick; with a little practice we were able to land tricks into a manual, which feels pretty good, especially the first time you do it.

i think skate definitely beats tony hawk games by far. i used to skateboard, and Skate. really gives the feel of skateboarding. i played both the skate and tony hawk demos and lemme tell ya, skate wins by far. i think many people can agree with me as well.

i think comparing this game to TH is gunna be like comparing Halo and Medal of Honor. they both have their good and bad qualitys. TH is incredibly unrealistic and eventually repetitive, but most video games are unrealistic, and thats why we play them. Skate sounds much more like a sim then the button masher Tony Hawk has become. we'll see if this is a good thing or a bad thing. i think the two games will be a lot more different than people think they will be. im also intrigued by the fact that there might be interaction with pedestrians(other than for them to ask you to shag their balls).

THIS GAME ROCKS!!!! i played the demo today and well its realistic the way you have to pop and then kick to the side to pull a kickflip in real life but on the controller pull down and push to top right or top left its wiked much better than boney dawks cruddy games as on them you can do a 1280 spin and 16 kickflips but on this game you would be lucky to do a tripple flip its wiked and no its not a rip off as this is a sim not a arcade piece of hacked up junk

A SIMULATION skating game is what I have prayed for, for so long. I hated the Tony Hawk series. It just got so stupid, repetitive, and worst of all... unrealistic. I couldnt stand it. I had to turn my stats ALL THE WAY down to try and skate realistically. Finally, a game that actually portrays the way skateboarding really is. I always wanted this back in my skate days. It has come a little late since I have grown out of skating, but if the controls flow good... then I will buy.

Everytime I buy a new tony hawk game, I find myself less and less impressed. WHen I got Project 8, i played it a bit, and now I can't keep the thing on for more than five minutes without popping in a new game. The same damn game, over and over and over again.

I look forward to this. Anyway, I have OCD, and it drives me NUTS how unrealistic the crap you can pull off in TH really is.

Looks awesome! The Tony Hawk controls got boring years ago. Master one game, you've pretty much mastered them all. Skate will be a nice challenge.

Dude this game is just a massive rip off of THs games. Remember who came first. Plus people it's EA. They rip everyone off and allways try to make "unique". Yeh right *rolls eyes*

Yeah, Rob & Big are gonna be in it. On their tv show they went to an EA location to be put in the game.

Anyway, I love the Tony Hawk series, but it'll be nice to see something different for a change.

It's going to be like NHL 07 was to hockey games. A new, innovative control scheme, probably not executed to its full potential, but enough of a change to make it really worthwhile. I'm reeeeeally looking forward to this.

okay its great the tony hawk is getting some compation!!! but personaly i dont think this game will have a big impact, because the controlls are bad. just from reading and watching interviews, u just spin the anlog and in tony hawk u have to know wat controlls do wat and u have to remeber trick combos. so therefore i think this game wont make much of a challenge for the tony hawk franchise. also the most reconised skater are in tony hawk games, for example bam margera, tony hawk, rodney mullen, and mike V.

hrrm...not a big fan of EA...but this title looks...ok...I guess, obviously couldn't say much about it at this stage...but it might be a good change as the Tony Hawks series is getting a little dry and lifeless

Sounds pretty cool, although I'm a little put off by the fact that you have to keep pushing A to move. And that the moves are executed using the right analog stick, but maybe that's just because I'm so used to the Tony Hawk series... All in all, I still plan on checking this game out and I hope that it turns out well.

I wanna play this just because no skating game that chose to be different from the TH series did too well. My favorite non-THPS game was Rockstar's Thrasher skate and destroy and if this game is along the lines of that then I want it. Though I must say, this game has that stupid looking "next gen" gloss to it. It does still seem kool tho, the spots are real or based on actual spots. so with the help of this; I can skate spots that are too far for my broke arse to afford to travel to.
