Sensible World of Soccer Hands-On

We get back to basics with Codemasters' forthcoming classic for Xbox Live Arcade.

It's fair to say that thanks to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade and the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console, we're seeing a lot of old games these days that many of us thought were consigned to the history books. Perhaps some games should have been, but Codemasters has delved deep into the rich tapestry of UK gaming history to pull out something of a classic.

Sensible World of Soccer first made its debut on the Commodore Amiga platform back in 1994 and developed the already popular Sensible Soccer franchise into something rather more far-reaching. By taking the existing gameplay and league structures, it added basic management options, as well as every professional club and national team in the world. It also included all of the correct names and basic facial characteristics for each player. Well, skin and hair colour, anyway.

In addition to a multitude of league or cup options, you could play as any team in any league and buy or sell players (whose value would change according to your performances) across a career spanning many in-game years. You could choose to play every match and attempt the ultimate feats of football brilliance by relying on your own joystick skills or just let the CPU manager take control instead. It was the best soccer game of its day, without a doubt.

After having played the slightly disappointing Sensible Soccer update that was released for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 last year, it was with some trepidation that we jumped into a multiplayer session of SWOS. While the initial adjustment period of getting used to playing a soccer game using just the analogue stick and a single button for all actions took a bit of time, once we got back into the swing of things, it was as if the past decade had never happened.

Compared to football games nowadays, the basic game is really just that: basic. Your players, almost matchstick in their graphical makeup, run around the pitch in one of eight directions, and only the best of them have the skill required to control the ball effectively. This means that, superstars aside, half of the work involved in the game is coaxing the ball up or down the pitch toward your desired goal.

Passing is haphazard at best, with successful connections only really made if another player on your team is almost exactly in line with the ball's path. The only real finesse the game contains is the degree of after-touch swerve that you can apply to long passes or shots. But that's just the way it should be because Codemasters hasn't tinkered with the gameplay at all, and it's great fun.

In fact, you can play the game in the exact form it was originally shipped, although it will also be possible to play in an enhanced mode. This mode basically tidies up some of the rough edges and applies more up-to-date Codemasters-related advertising hoardings. It also adds other bits and pieces, such as deteriorating pitches. The player data is all taken from the 1996-7 edition of the game and the relevant team rosters of the time, which brings back a few memories. However, it's unlikely that the XBLA game will feature the appropriate licences, so expect Sensible versions of all of those player names.

As part of the upgrade process, SWOS will include the standard array of achievement points for completing various challenges within the game. It will also support full online multiplayer options, although that needn't stop you from hosting those SWOS parties that seemed so much fun back in the day.

The final release date for the game hasn't been confirmed just yet, and there are still one or two tweaks that are being made to the code. But from what we've seen so far, the SWOS experience of 2007 is an authentic one, and after a few games, potentially addictive too! Keep an eye out for more on SWOS in the coming months.

96/97??? Wow that means Bosrussia is still good. That means Baggio and Weah, Boksic and Vieri, I belive Zamorano and Ganz. And Ajax will be still amazing with both De Boers still there. Hell you will be able to find Maradona probably (I think its Boca Juniors). God today feels like Christmas (I just found out about that game coming to XBOX360). Soon I will be able to win everything with Widzew again. Life is beatifull...

    "Look at this.....
4 years of x box live costs $200.
The PS3 gets it for free.
The PS3 has a wi-fi connection built in.
The 360 owners have to spend another $100 there.
The controllers cost $10 more for the 360.
The PS3 has a way bigger hard drive, 360 owners need to put at least $100 in to that.
    Plus the better graphics, the fact that the PS3 can play blue-rays, and has a motion-sensitve controller. X-BOX 360- $800......... PS3- $600
What exactly does the 360 have now?"

I remember trying toplay this game when it came out....i found it really frustrating and couldn't understand why people kept raving about it.

I'm tempted to download it and give it another go....might as well i guess if i can trial it for free.

I remember that AP demo too... I'm sure that there were some castles from Mega-lo-Mania to the sides of the pitch too, weren't there? I seem to remember one of my players getting an arrow through the chest!
Sensible were awesome back in the Amiga days.

A great addition to the XBox Arcade series.

Considered as the all time classic footy game, this I'm sure will also introduce many new players to the SWOS world.

This gamme is my all time fav classic, me my family and friends used to play this nearly every day on the amiga 600+(people moaning about the price of the ps3, my parents forked out £500 to get the amiga 600+ when it was released but it was well worth it i wish i still had it).

I hope cannon fodder come's to xbox live arcade also.

I was gutted when i seen the preview of this game expecting it to come out this week as my 360 is away back for the second time due to the 3 red lights of death i got one day of playing the halo 3 beta and i doubt i will get my 360 back in time to play it again.

At least ms are not charging me for a re-placement i dont know why, my first one went two weeks after launch and i got the new one in jan 06 so it was well out of warrenty but it got picked up for free and is being re-placed for free so it's just the annoying wait of around 3 weeks without my 360, i suppose i just got mario strikers for wii and its got online so that and a few pc games will keep me going.

Another thing i just bought the wireless racing wheel and i have forza pre-ordered so thats a bummer.

    But it's all good.

You are correct, that indeed is quite freaky!

There was another sensi 1966 world cup demo that had the match and all the classic players and you played it in black and white. Those were the days...

They should defo do cannon fodder for xbox live! but the controller would make that difficult last few levels even more difficult. I dunno how mega drive gamers ever finished it!

This is gonna be sweet. The transfer market was awesome, trying to push an interested party for that extra few £100k.

I remember a demo disk I had (possibly Amiga Power) which was a mixture of Sensi and Cannon Fodder. The players were soldiers and the ball was a timebomb! When it started flashing it was due to go off and anyone nearby got killed. Fair to say the games didn't last long.

Can anyone remember the old versions of sensible soccer that came with some demo discs all those years ago? Hand grenade football anyone?? haha. For those not in the know... you kicked a cannon fodder hand grenade about the pitch and it started flashing, then a few seconds later went boooom, killing the poor sod on the ball at the time. It was pure genius. They have to add that to the live content for this game!!!!

Ohhh i was 15 when swos was released on my beloved amiga 500+ and lets just say that me and my friends used to play this game long into the nights. You can play a tournament in about 30 minutes, its an ideal party game for sure. I will be purchasing this fantastic gem of a game! Even the management aspect of the game rulz!!!!
