What is the criteria for unlocking characters and other things via VS Multiplayer mode?

What are the criteria for unlocking all of the characters (and other things) via VS Multiplayer mode? I read somewhere that those things can be unlocked in Multiplayer mode. Please list exactly what needs to be done to unlock each individual thing. Thanks.
