E3 06: Gundam 360 named, detailed

Namco Bandai confirms Mobile Ops: The One Year War to hit US shelves by the end of the year.

At the Japanese Xbox Summit 2005 last July, Bandai announced that it was working on an exclusive Xbox 360 game, a first-person shooter set in the Gundam universe. During his unveiling of the game, Bandai president Shin Unozawa explained that the Gundam name hasn't been widely accepted in America and that this game was intended to change that. Bandai has since undergone a number of changes (including a merger with fellow Japanese publisher Namco), but that goal has apparently remained the same.

Namco Bandai today formally unveiled the game to US audiences as Mobile Ops: The One Year War. Developed by Dimps, the studio behind many of the publisher's Dragon Ball Z titles, The One Year War is set at the dawn of the Gundam universe, just as the age of giant robot "mobile suits" is beginning. Players are sent to the front lines of the war to fight the good fight on foot, in various vehicles, and of course at the controls of terrifyingly powerful mobile suits.

Aside from the standard HD treatment required for Xbox 360 games, Namco Bandai is including support for online play. The number of players allowed in online battles hasn't been determined yet. However, Unozawa did say last year that he wanted the game to have a similar atmosphere to Electronic Arts' Battlefield 1942, which supports up to 64 players online. The game will also let players customize the mobile suits they take into battle, from their arsenal of beam sabers and heat hawks to their array of sensor equipment.

Mobile Ops: The One Year War is scheduled to arrive in stores this coming holiday season. No price information was announced. Expect to see more about the title in GameSpot's coverage of this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

    P S 3 FANS U S|U|C|K loooool the way the 360 is doing now ps3 may never catch up if u hve a ps3 ur gonna wish that all the games coming out for the 360 would be on ur system

    When is this game coming to the 360? There's been, like, no word on it at all since E3 it seems. I hope the game is still a "go."

    so far all the gundam games that are out are with the ps2. . . AND THEY ALL SUCK ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    i want this game, my brother thinks the mobile suits move as slow as the mech assault robots but i think it is just fine. this looks like its shaping up pretty good. if i had to choose between crossfire and this, screw cross fire i want this!!!.

    i wonder if they are gonna make a GOOD gundam game for the wii, and when i say good, i dont mean that crapy ass SD gundam game

    yeah those are great games. I never said anything about NON ONLINE, NON-MMO Japanese games. if you read my post, you would see that i said that PSO and FFXI were PATHETIC when compared to WOW or Guild Wars. and yes, i do agree that those JapRPG franchises you mention are indeed AWESOME.

    It's okay doomsoth, you can keep hoping that the Japanese will buy the 360 version over the PS3 version. You can hope that the 360 outsells the PS3. Do you honestly think Namco will spend more time on the 360 version over the PS3 version? If it keeps you sleeping at night, so be it. However, you'll have to wake up to the absurd reality that the Japanese control the Video Game Industry. Because of this, the PS3 version will be better...again how many Japaneses will own PS3s over 360s next year? )

    the way this sounds is like it's a sequal to the Dreamcast Gundam game that was released WAY WAY back.

    Still the best gundam game to this date, it was a FPS that was ALWAYS in the cockpit and the machines moved and acted like they were giant machines.

    To bad Bandai could never replicate that game on any system, hopefully this will change.

    Well from what I've seen so far the demo for PS3 Gundam game looked more impressive than this one so far. Just have to wait for further report from the E3 I suppose. It des look pretty nice though. As funny as it may sound Gundam games do sell here in Japan but I doubt it's going to make X360 exponentially more popular all of a sudden as PS3 will be expect a Gundam game as well. Anyhow I must say this game's title sounds vaguely similar to the Namco' Project Pegasus MSGundam: One Year War game for PS2 that was release on PS2 in March 05 here in Japan. I wonder if it's just a remake of that (which was a pretty good game). Anyhoo.....

    What's the OVER UNDER BET on how many PS3 fan boys will post the "PS3 VERSION WILL BE BETTER"...?

    So far we stand at 2 posts with Kaos-Angel and Paul the Great leading the way...

    The articles clearly states in the first sentence, it's an Xbox 360 Exclusive...

    I've always liked Gundam shows since about 4th grade (In 9th now) but was never interested in any other anime. I hope this gives the series justice because I can't wait to be able able to design my own Gundam, then use it online

    finally a plethoria of mech games on the xbox platform... This Gundam game, Zegapain, Lost Planet, Chromehounds, and Armored Core 4, I can't wait! Now all we need is a Steel Battalion 2.
