Alpha Protocol officially delayed to 'Spring 2010'

Following rumors and retail date changes, Sega is now officially listing Obsidian's espionage RPG as arriving early next year.

Nearly one week ago, retailers began listing Alpha Protocol as being delayed until mid-2010. Now, on the day it was supposed to ship for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, Sega has confirmed the postponement. On its official Web site, the publisher now lists the game as arriving in "Spring 2010" on all three platforms.

Alpha Protocol's exact launch date remains unclear. GameStop is listing the game as shipping on June 1, 2010, toward the end of the second quarter. Amazon's Canadian store has it as arriving in North America on June 30, 2010, the last day of Q2.

As recently as August 27, Obsidian staffers were saying that Alpha Protocol was still on schedule. The delay marks the second time Sega has drastically altered the release plans of a game developed by the Orange County, California-based independent studio. In February, the publisher indefinitely delayed Obsidian's unnamed role-playing game based on the Alien film series, before canceling it outright in June.

Alpha Protocol weaves a story not unlike Robert Ludlum's popular Jason Bourne novels. The RPG's plot follows Michael Thorton, a secret agent who has turned rogue after being disavowed by his government. However, given that the game accommodates a branching storyline a la BioWare's sci-fi RPG Mass Effect, players can assume a variety of undercover personas, ranging from a suave James Bond-style spy to one like the maniacal Jack Bauer of 24 fame.

Sega's Lame period. At least we get dragon age, otherwise this would be a premium rpg-less holiday season. Thinking back, did 09 have any worthwhile rpg's? None. Please don't say demonsoul, that isn't an rpg. This was a horrid year for rpgs.

since so many different publishers are really afraid of modern warfare 2 taking all their sales...they are all delaying the games..take splinter cell conviction which went from november to march...the problem now is that all these great games are going to be released in a period of a few months next year so it delaying doesn't really change things.......

If memory serves the game is finished my guess is they either feel it needs more polish or they are a bit weary of the few heavy hitters like Dragon age, Modern Warfare and Assassins Creed II. As long as a good game is given to us in the end I'll be happy.

I'm pretty upset about this delay, but I guess I can understand where they are coming from. A LOT of good games are being released in the next few months.

But that doesn't bode well for Alpha Protocol at all. Perhaps they don't think it can compete? That's not good news for us.

Stunts like this really kill my faith in Sega. They used to make good games years ago....ok, that was in late 90's. Now I can't name a Sega game I have purchased except for that game collection with all four of the original Phantasy Star RPG's...Ah, yet another series Sega has ruined.

What is the point of delaying the game?spring is still going to be crowded with other great games, Splinter Cell Conviction, GOWIII, Bioshock 2, Heavy Rain I think and the list goes on, Sega should might as well release it until summer of next year 'cause that's the only season that doesn't seem crowded.

I pre-purchased this game through steam and once i heard about this push back i asked for my money back, seeing that id have to wait till May next year to play the game. Thankfully steam agreed to pay back the money they had recieved.

The fact they didn't tell us before launch day is just obscene how is that good customer relations for a company as big as sega? And i dont believe it's the game needs more work i think they just realised to late that they had aimed to release in a window with far to much competition especially from Dragon Age.

I was intrigued by this game. But luckily for me I had bigger interests, so this hasn't let me down too much but I'm still dissapointed that sega didn't make an earlier anouncement to save us the annoyance of finding out last second. Oh well... The more time they spend polishing the game up the better it'll be. WITH LESS GLITCHES. And thank goodness for this fact too, becuase everyone liked KOTOR 2 but due to short production times that game was rushed out of the door earlier than it ever should've been.
Different company, but I'm still bitter about that experience.

And I'm allway's more or less happy to wait some more so I don't get the same experience.
