Age of Conan fans plunder Collector's Edition

Special edition of massively multiplayer online game has sold out, with 111,000 copies destined to reach gamers' hands at launch.

Gamers have been waiting a long time for the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. Originally slated to be released in the first half of 2006, the game has finally gone gold after repeated delays, and is now due in stores on May 20 in the US and May 23 in Europe.

Funcom today boasted that the limited Collector's Edition, which includes two in-game items, a map of Hyboria, a 124-page art book, and an exclusive documentary DVD, has now completely sold out--despite 110,000 being sold after a second print run due to popular demand.

A total of 700,000 copies of the game are being shipped on day one, and Funcom says that due to "equally impressive preorder numbers" and "server capacity limitations," it has not been able to fulfil all orders for the game. It has ordered extra servers to make it possible for more players to join.

Funcom also added that the copies of the game shipping will not support DirectX 10 at launch, saying, "As Microsoft's DirectX 10 is undoubtedly the future of PC gaming, Funcom has decided to ship only the DirectX 9 version at launch, giving the team more time to focus on building a DirectX 10 version worthy of Microsoft's great vision for the future of PC gaming."

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is a fantasy-action MMORPG developed by Funcom--which also developed Anarchy Online--for the PC and Xbox 360. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's prelaunch hands-on.

It sounds as if Funcom didn't anticipate that their own game would be this big this fast. I'll eagerly await the 360 version, although from the sound of it, AoC may not come out until next year for the console. Bummer.

I want that art book and I want DX 10. I guess I'll wait a few months and see what happens. In the meantime, I'm playing LotRO.

    smashhero Yo, Crzy1.
I have the game running in DX10 and it worked fine.
Looks alot better than DX9 too with it's realistic shadow effect, DX10 fog, and better textures.
It really look great ! Smash are u mistaken or just plain lying maybe you should read the last 2 paragraphs of the press release before you state that you are playing it with dx10

I ritualistically denounced my faith in World of Warcraft after playing this game for 1 hour. I took all my WoW CD's, smashed them with a hammer, burned my box sets, game guides, instruction/ installation manuals and even the friend passes. Then i gave my account to a very irresponsible friend, since killing my 70 Alliance Paladin was like murdering my own child. I already preordered the collector's edition of AoC about a month ago and finally blizzard released its grip on my soul.

"IDarkNight I reserved this game a month ago. (the normal edition) And i can't w8 'cause the gameplay in the videos looks very original. At last we can cut or aim the enemies head!!

I think this game will be rulz 'cause WAR (i had played the beta) is very similar to WoW and don't have any new (only the PvP, but is very bad too).

We are in the new age of the MMORPG!"

WAR is EQ 7.0. It was designed to be the same game with realm vs realm. Meaning meatshield, healer, dps... rinse wash repeat. They have auto attacks just like all other EQ clones, pigeon holded classes just like other EQ clones, etc...

So, EQ/WOW that like that kind of game with the same illogical combat system. Monster with no AI that ignore everyone else that is killing them... warriors with massive 2h weapons that hit with all the force of a nerf bat.... WAR is the game you people that want the same experience as EQ/WOW with a few slight changes to it. Oh FYI WAR is suppored by EA...

AOC was built from the ground up with a table top/ tactical strategy combat system in mind. Anyone saying AOC combat is boring must then believe EQ combat is comatose inducing by comparison.

Game is buggy with still unfinished unfeatures. The first 20 levels were kinda fun but got real boring after that.

Two questions. 1) How much does it cost a month to play? I'm sure there is a 30day FREE trial, but how much does it cost after that?
    2) Has this game been reviewed yet? What kind of scores did it get?

This is a great game! Some issues with the various destiny quests that they need to work out though, but yeah, I think that won't be an issue for long.

Good work Funcom! (Judging by the Early Access)
