Xbox Live gets Labor Day sale

Downloadable game service to temporarily slash prices on four older titles; Fatal Fury Special and Cyberball 2072 confirmed for Wednesday release.

To date, console downloadable game services have proven a mixed blessing for obsessively thrifty gamers. While the games available on Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation Store, and the Wii Virtual Console are less expensive than their retail counterparts, they never go on sale (outside of introductory pricing on some PlayStation Store titles).

However, to celebrate the Labor Day holiday and give gamers home from work something to pass the time, Microsoft will be taking half off the prices of four older Xbox Live Arcade games for two days. This Sunday and Monday, gamers will be able to get deals on Gauntlet, Dig Dug, Small Arms, and Zuma Deluxe. Gauntlet and Dig Dug will be 200 Microsoft points each, or $2.50. Small Arms and Zuma Deluxe will be cut to 400 Microsoft points, or $5 a pop.

Along with news of the sale, Microsoft also announced next week's Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday releases. Midway's Cyberball 2072 and SNK Playmore's Fatal Fury Special will be joining the service's new release section. Originally released in 1989, Cyberball 2072 is a futuristic take on football with teams made of robots and a ball that's constantly threatening to explode. Players have more than 100 plays to choose from, and team rosters that can be bolstered by purchasing new players with each game's earnings.

While Fatal Fury Special was recently rereleased on the PlayStation 2 as part of the Fatal Fury Battle Archives, the Xbox Live Arcade edition of the 1993 Neo Geo fighting game includes online multiplayer bouts, leaderboards, and a dozen achievements. The game was based primarily on Fatal Fury 2, although it added more playable characters, as well as a speedier pace and more combo opportunities.

Fatal Fury Special and Cyberball 2072 will each sell for 400 Microsoft points ($5).

you know they need to be doing this for more of the titles that have been on XBLA for a long time .... 200 MS points is a good deal for some of the titles that your only likely to play for a day or two .. some of these games are up their for 800 points and you know you'll be bored within a couple of hours !

    Wii Japan:
Fatal Fury 1 for 900 (9 dollars) Wii points without online.

    360:
Fatal Fury Special for 400 (5 dollars) Microsoft points with online and extras.

    The winner is clear.

This needs to happen on PSN too. A year from now, I'm not going to go to the store and buy Tekken for $30.

Might pick up Small Arms now. I really hope that some people patch that bug that Zuma has where the controls lock up and you almost invariably lose.

Microsoft should have a temporary sale of all of their GOOD XBLA titles, instead of just 4 piece of crap games that aren't even worth 2 dollars.I mean,a 24 hour sale on games like Prince of Persia,Doom,Street Fighter,Ultimate MK3 and such would be a much better bargain than 4 boring games I would never consider looking at.Oh well, this is a step in the right direction, and the only one that isn't incredibly boring is Zuma, but only for a bit.Nice to see Fatal Fury and Cyberball finally make a come back, hopefully those games will have aged well,as I loved playing them back in the day.
