360 Texas Hold 'Em dated

Free Xbox Live Arcade poker game set for release on August 23, according to Xbox.com; features support for tournaments, eight players online.

Microsoft recently announced that it will be releasing downloadable games in the middle of the week as part of its Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays program. The company revealed the first five games on the promo's schedule but didn't venture beyond that, ending with Pac-Man on August 9.

Now it appears that a fortnight after gamers are gobbling up ghosts and feeding on power pellets they'll be gambling on inside straights and reading players' tells. On Xbox.com, the product page for Texas Hold 'Em shows a release date of August 23, a date that has been confirmed for GameSpot by a Microsoft rep.

Gamers won't be able to play for money, but that shouldn't bother too many because the game itself is free, making it the second free game for the Xbox 360 after Hexic HD (available gratis on the optional 20GB hard drive). Card sharks will be able to play standard games, tournaments, and various scenarios, as well as create their own poker variants for up to eight players.

Microsoft needs to give away EVERY arcade game for free in Japan!!!

Either that, or just get Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

You can't play poker proberly without money. It's imposible to bluff because people don't loose anything when they call. Even if there's a ladder system with points. You still wouldn't feel like really loosing anything.

You know--MS could do those free ones without ads as a loss leader to get more people on XBL. Get them on there and they are more likely to buy other games (Uno, Monopoly (if it were available), Geometry wars, lumines, etc.)

Rockrollr--THe problem is that a lot of simple games ARE "free" at Yahoo and other places. They have an ad at the top of the window. No big deal. Their free pool game which is very simple playwise and graphics wise use to have 30k people playing it at any given time. Chess, Checkers, etc. often had close to 10k. Spades is popular too. Backgammon. Heck--look at XP--it has free internet Backgammon, checkers, hearts, spades, reversi. Those adds don't seem to bother the often 100k+ at yahoo. Certainly I don't think all games should be free. But you have to look at the competition--Yahoo, MSN--the games that are free there, should be free at XBL. And basic games shouldn't really cost that much to develop. Since there is no 1-player, you don't need any AI, just the board and the rules.

You all should know good and well that nothing in 2006 is FREE. You either have to give up something of personal value or pay money for it.

In this case, you'll be giving up your time and attention so that you may be bombarded with advertisements and marketing campaigns. I'm quite sure this is going to be a test run for Microsoft. They're going to be trying to figure out if XB Live members would be willing to download and keep "free" games if they (Microsoft) can make money directly from advertisers instead. Billing would become much easier and much cheaper for Microsoft using this method.

Remember what good ol' Mom said, "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is."

I might just have to learn how to play Texas Hold 'Em.
Why does it always seem easier to learn from a game?
    Oh well this'll be great.
