THQ drops word of Tetris Evolution

Publisher brings classic puzzler to Xbox 360 with customizable presentation elements, new game modes.

In 2005, THQ sued The Tetris Company for breaking its agreements with the publisher and giving the rights to the classic puzzle game to Nintendo for Tetris DS, causing THQ's own DS edition of the game to be scrapped. The two parties settled their dispute last year, and THQ emerged from the fracas with the rights to make a Tetris game on the Xbox 360.

Today the publisher exercised those rights with the announcement of Tetris Evolution for Microsoft's console, the first THQ-published Tetris game since 2003's Tetris Worlds on the original Xbox. As for what the title's evolution entails, THQ said it is adding new gameplay modes, customizable presentation aspects (themes, skins, icons, and music), and online play for up to four players.

Tetris Evolution is slated for release next month.

This game looks like garbage. The New Tetris on the N64 was much, much better.

THQ, you've screwed up by making this a full retail game. Tetris is too simple to be put on disc and sell successfully in the digital distribution era. I'm sure ten times more consumers would purchase this via XBLA over standard 360 DVD format. THQ is spending MUCH MORE money putting this game on disc, printing slipcase art and shipping to retailers than they would simply releasing on XBLA (excluding the lengthy approval process). I would not waste the time/effort putting the disc into my console for just the inevitable cut-scenes. What a mistake.

I WOULD, on the other hand, purchase this game if it were offered via XBLA. I love Tetris and have GREAT respect for Mr. Alexey Pajitnov for introducing one of the most popular genres to gaming. I just do not see ANY reason to buy a game of ONLY Tetris on disc.

Ahh... tetris is tetris no matter how you update or change it. I think it shouldhave been an xbla game but since it is not I'll never buy it knowing its probably more than 20 bucks, and that's way too much for just another tetris game. I've never been a big tetris fan anyway... well not at all actually but the online play sounds kinda cool.

The only reason this wasn't released as an Xbox Live Arcade game had to be because those games only net $5 - $10. Tetris rocks, but no matter how you try to jazz it up with backgrounds and sound effects, it's still just tetris.
    This better not cost $60.

Giving the rights to Nintendo led to a great game, but I don't think Tetris Company did right by THQ. With that in mind, I don't see THQ doing right by Xbox 360 owners, as a full retail price for such a game seems a little unfair.

I would hapily buy a Arcade version though.

I'm a huge Tetris fan, but wish I would have heard about this sooner, as I just recently purchased Tetris Worlds the original Xbox game as I seen it was backward-comp. with the Xbox 360. I don't really want to turn around and buy this one, but I most likely will have to especially if my Girlfriend catches news of it.

If it's XBLA, it'll be mine; The Grand King of Puzzle Games! But if it's retail monster of 50+ USD price tag I seriously doubt it...

My interest for Tetris dropped significantly after playing Lumines. Don't know if I would like to pick it up...

"DOOM_SONYMAN: AND YOU WONDER WHY I HELD OUT FOR PS3"

Not so much wondering as couldn't care less.

Knocking Tetris out on a next gen console, even at $30 is an absolute disgrace, you could get the whole game on a poxy memory card. Can't wait for the Sony fanboys to say it'll be SOOOO much better with the advantage of Blu-ray though.

Why can't this be a simple version available on Xbox Live Arcade?

I already beat the Standard mode on my Nintendo DS, therefore unlocking endless mode, but once you beat Tetris you don't really want to come back to it.

I wouldn't get this for my 360 even if it was released on Live Arcade.

EDIT: Um, yeah, one of the problems with trying to sell Tetris is there are so many 3rd party clones out there for free on the PC already. I actually programmed my own version of Tetris once on the Amiga, but I didn't really know what the Tetris pieces were of the top of the head, so my game included a piece shaped like a + sign.

This should be a XBLA game for sure it's these classics that will make XBLA a lot better look at Wii's virtual console they have Super Mario and Sonic. But looking at the picture of the gaming box top right it look like it's gonna be a full priced game.
