Star Trek beams up Rock Band promotion

Paramount teams with MTV and Harmonix on rhythm-game song giveaways, avatar-creation contest, battle of the bands; registration opens today.

Trekkies will face a reckoning of sorts on May 8, when Paramount Pictures will release to theaters worldwide J.J. Abrams' controversial take on Gene Roddenberry's revered Star Trek. Today, fellow Viacom subsidiary MTV Games said that it would be helping out with promotion on the film, announcing a host of Star Trek-themed content and contests for its popular four-piece rhythm game franchise Rock Band.

With registration opening today, MTV Games will be giving away 500 Rock Band Music Store downloads each day from April 7 to April 21. Rock Band owners can register through the official Star Trek-Rock Band Web site, and the song downloads are only for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of the game.

Beginning on April 20, Rock Band 2 owners can compete in the Star Trek Ultimate Battle contest through the game's online Battle of the Bands mode. The contest, which runs through April 27, pits bands of three to four against one another in a competition for the highest score. The winning band will be awarded with a private screening of Star Trek in their hometown. MTV Games will also give away prize packs with Star Trek and Rock Band merchandise to 20 randomly selected participants.

The final component of MTV Games' Star Trek promotion will be the "first-ever avatar-creation contest," which will kick off on April 27. The contest will task Rock Band owners to create a custom in-game avatar and then export it to the Rock Band Web site. The winning avatar will be selected on May 11 by both the community and Harmonix team, and the creator will receive The Future Is Now prize pack, which includes "top-of-the-line Rock Band game accessories."

Make fun of Star Trek all you want but Captain Kirk never made out with his sister unlike Luke Skywalker. I mean what kind of idiot do you have to be to forget that Luke and Leia were making out in the last movie. And I think Jar Jar Binks proves that George Lucas has lost his mind. That in my book makes Star Trek better then Star Wars.

Cross promotion nightmare. So, what, this leaves Guitar Hero for Star Wars? Which sides will Coke and Pepsi choose? (c'mon, you know it's inevitable)

Star Trek is far better than Star Wars, especially DS9. Star Trek was originally a clever way of conveying morals via stories whereas Star Wars is merely a script for a crappy kids series turned into a trilogy of iffy movies that the actors involved with thought were crap at the time.

Giving away free space-themed songs would've been a lot better: Space Cowboy, that Bowie one that's rubbish, Spaceman.

Also on the subject of Avatars - you should've done a deal with Xbox Live to let Star Trek stuff be used on their avatars. Then you would have had some kind of major impact.

Wow. Way to confuse everyone by announcing the *dumbest movie promotion ever* on April 1st. If it wasn't for the fact that all the other fake news stories have already vanished from GameSpot, I would still think this was an April Fool's joke. What a stupid idea. What the fark does Rock Band have to do with Star Trek? Oh, wait, I know, NOTHING. Just because they are both ran by subsidiaries of the same company does *not* mean they go together.

It is stupid stuff like this that makes me think the movie is going to suck and they feel the need to pull crap like this to try and get people interested in it.
