Wet Boneyard Level Hands-On

We take one final look at Wet ahead of release to see how the new challenges in the Boneyard level are shaping up.

While Wet may be full of retro B-movie gunslinging action, there's more to the game's heroine, Rubi, than simply shooting and slicing everything in sight. In our previous hands-on, we took a look at Rubi's fighting skills and rage mode as well some light puzzle solving and on-rails sections. The final piece of the Wet puzzle is the Boneyard level, which acts as a home for Rubi in the game and houses a number of challenges to play through.

The Boneyard is a desolate place, full of broken-down planes and run-down vehicles smack bang in the middle of the desert, more than slightly reminiscent of the aircraft graveyards featured in films like Con Air. Yet this is Rubi's home, and like any good action hero, her home is stocked full of guns and platforms to keep her amused--but make no mistake, this is no Croft Manor. The Boneyard level will be accessible at any point in the game, and you will be able to use it as a training ground for new skills picked up during the single-player campaign. You can also participate in time trials and challenges.

The first challenge we encountered in the level involved a race through a series of hoops that were scattered around the environment. The aim of the challenge was to make it through all the red hoops on the map as fast as possible, while shooting targets that appear when you're jumping through special fire hoops. The course makes full use of Rubi's acrobatic skills: jumping, wall-walking, and sliding around on the floor all play a part. Passing through a fire hoop activates targets that pop up on parts of the environment--one of them Rubi will autotarget with one pistol, while the other targets have to be manually aimed at using the other weapon, with time rewarded for accuracy. The fire hoops are strategically placed around areas where jumping and wall-walking are required to progress, allowing full use of the game's slow-motion mode to hit the targets.

The courses proved quite challenging on the first play-through, and while we were able to land a bronze medal on the first course without too much trouble, it looks like nailing gold medals will require a fair amount of thought and high-quality execution. Not all challenges use the same weapons--we were able to try one time trial that used the shotgun as a primary weapon. Unlike the pistol, the shotgun does not have unlimited ammunition, so ammo has to be picked up along parts of the course. The shotgun race also introduced monkey bars and zip lines, which upped the ante in terms of difficulty.

The final challenge we played involved a Gatling gun mounted to the top of an old plane. This played much like an old carnival shooting gallery: targets randomly popped up from behind a wooden building, and we had to try to shoot them--the aim simply being to shoot as many targets as possible in the given time. The game also threw in barrels and clay pigeons to shoot, which fly across the screen and required us to quickly adjust our aim as we tried to shoot those and the pop-up targets. Fortunately, the Gatling gun had unlimited ammo and didn't overheat, so it was a case of holding the trigger down and aiming.

The graphics on the Boneyard level looked great, and we especially liked the spaghetti-Western style of the desert setting, which fit in perfectly with the cheesy b-movie style of the rest of the game. We also liked that the level gives you the chance to take a break from the action of the campaign mode and indulge in some old-school high-score chasing. Wet is due for release on September 18, so check back here for a full review soon.

wow... its really quite a talent to make a demo that bad!! graphics were mediocre by todays standards, gameplay was dull and after the first manouvre it was highly repetitive culminating in a terrible car chase where you had to press the button at the right time... if anything it showed a lack of imagination and poor graphics. if this gets more than 7 stars the review system here blows!

if you want a great game where you can fire guns and swing a sword from a third person perspective go get devil may cry and leave this game to rot in the pile where it belongs.

omg i havent seen graphics this bad in forever. i thought we were past this in this generation. these graphics are worse than the wii. jagginess and grossness everywhere in the demo. turned it off before i got out of the first room. not just because of the graphics but because the gameplay itself sucked too.

idk way people think the demo sucks, this game is going to be amazing if you have half a brain and get used to the dual aiming and acrobatics, if this game doesnt receive at least an 8 gamespot failed yet again

Stranglehold anyone? Ok, this game does have some added features, but it seems to me this is a game that you would be playing for a few hours and then leave it as another dustcollector.

Bethesda=mannequin-like character face without expression. The demo was so and so, graphics are too much dated and gameplay cool only in the first room, after that became repetitive like hell and controls are not good enough. It's basically a kill bill game, she just needs a yellow suit. Visuals in the "red part" were really cool though.

Where can u find a demo. I don't have it in my PS store. Is that because I have an European account. Or was I just not looking good enough. eitherway I'm looking forward to play this game

A game that really doesn't know what it wants to be. The demo left me flat. Gameplay can't be sacrificed for cool "action" graphics. Frankly, I thought it showed nothing new and the graphics were quite ugly.

I was iffy on the demo until I got to the rage mode, which was really cool and stylish. It made up for the ho-hum graphics.

Unfortunately, I don't think that mode can carry the game...

The demo is so awful, I can't even figure out, how they suppose to make a money with that thing. The game fails just about everything so far.

Screen shots have always doctored but I think in this generation (360, PS3) its a dilemma thats worse than ever. That said I was really excited about Wet before then demo and now Im on the fence. I'll give them a pass on the graphics, really every game can't be Uncharted. But the constant jumping and sliding to shoot someone gets old really fast and is just plain dopey. At best it's a rent before you buy.

The demo did not convince me. Like some of the worst Tarantino movies - for fans only.

the game looks to be simular to b-movies not just in style, but reception too. I think lots of people will hate this game when it launches because of its unrefined gunplay and repetition, but like the b-movie spirit it'll be the underground king of the bargain bin a few years from now. I'd buy this for 25 bucks

I hated the demo. The graphics are technically ugly (though the grindhouse style is kind of cool), the voice acting was terrible, the controls are clunky, the shooting is unresponsive, the AI sucks, the shooting is awful overall, and the slo-mo is way too overused.

At the moment, WET just seems too repetitive.

Based on the demo, I think that half the people will love this game for its action and style, and half the people will hate it, for the exact some reason.

I can see myself picking up a used copy to kill a weekend someday, but I'm not going to rush out and buy it at launch.

PS. Can someone explain why Rubi can slide across the floor without a running start?

I'll give it a try IF the game has good reviews.

I was in two minds about this game after playing the demo.

On one hand hand I could see how it would be a fun game. Easy to pick up and play whenever you want to just shoot some people while looking way cool doing it. On the other, I thought the graphics were terrible compared to most games these days. I will be buying this - for the fun factor and for Eliza's voice-over - but I probably won't pay full price as all in all it doesn't look worth over £20 to me.
