E3 '07: Virtua Fighter 5 Hands-On

The Xbox 360 version of Sega's fighter is on the E3 show floor. We take a look.

Surprise! Virtua Fighter 5 on the Xbox 360 looks a lot like it did on the PlayStation 3. Plays like it too. Oh, except it has online play. And online leaderboards. But other than that, our time spent with the game at E3 2007 reminded us very much of its PS3 counterpart. And that's a good thing.

So, for the sake of immediate disclosure, no, online play was not on display in the build of VF5 at E3. However, we did get a look at what some of the leaderboard action was all about. Many of the leaderboards will be tied into the various offline modes in the game. Quest mode has its own leaderboard, as does command time attack, which is a mode where you're presented with a series of commands to perform, like a specific series of attacks or a combo. Every time you properly pull off a series of commands, a new one pops up. The goal is to get through all the commands as quickly as possible. There's also a score attack mode, which is a series of fights in a traditional arcade path. You get three choices for paths, and your score at the end of the path determines your place on the leaderboards.

In terms of other content exclusive to the Xbox 360, there's not very much. This version is based on the most recent update of the arcade game, so some characters will have a few new costumes. Otherwise, this is very much the same game you may or may not remember from the PlayStation 3. The gameplay is still a great deal of fun, especially with the new licensed Hori stick that was hooked up at the demo station. Graphically, the game looks very much on par with the PS3 game. The Sega rep we spoke to stated that this version looked a bit smoother in terms of antialiasing, but otherwise, the two should be practically identical.

Despite the inability to try the online mode, the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 looks very sharp. We'll be sure to bring you more on the game between now and its release later this year.

I get the impression the online mode is going to be a bit awkward for the afficianados. The director, in an interview on this site, said they did not want to do online because of lag inconistency, whether or not the hardware has advanced. Frames are an important part of the game, and dropping them due to lag would be infuriating. Even so, I love that Hori has designed a VF5 stick. To me, it's disappointing that the game came out on PS3 first. I really want to see the PS3 succeed, but it's just not gonna happen for a little while. Also, XboxGuyxx, you're crazy. Virtua Fighter is a whole different ballgame. It doesn't matter what system it is on, the fans will buy the system and the game and the arcade sticks. Sega knows its fanbase for this game already, and it could care less if you are disappointed in extra costumes. I can respect showing developers that you don't care about mild additions, particularly in the area of game sequels, but to shoot down VF5 on the 360 is absurd. Go play Halo.

Guile Charlie is right, I'd love to see the PS3 version get online play, especially if they can get it cross-platform. They won't, but seriously, the more the merrier.

Yeah, sure, the 360 version has online play and more customization options, which really surprised and excited me at first, but then I thought about it for a while. Sega can add downloadable content in the form of more customizable outfits and items anytime they want to the PS3 as well. And, If Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection for the PS3 could have online play added to it, couldn't the PS3 version of VF5 get the same treatment. If I'm wrong, please tell me, but that's just a thought.

I recommend all 360 owners turn this shoddy port down. They give us practically nothing as an exclusive. We need to show these game developers that they can't come out with a game on PS3 first to gain favor with Sony fanboys then port it over to the 360 to make the money to cover their overhead with our larger install base. I guarantee that we will see extra costumes and stages on marketplace for more money a few months after this is released. Show companies like Sega that if they want our money we want exclusives.

Looks like the 360 will have the best version. Maybe they will update the PS3 version for some on-line action ?

i can't remember did sega ever say that the online play was exclusive? anyway cool! I prefer VF on another system, it creates healthy competition. Namco started to slack off on Tekken when VF came to the same console. With it on 360 that will create great comp again, and both companies will greatly improve their franchises. SO, TEKKEN ONLINE VS. VIRTUA FIGHTER ONLINE. The battle is on again!!

Online will be the main highlight for the game. I hope they do it well. Too bad it wasn't on this demo.
