Shippin' Out February 25-29: Frontlines, Turning Point

Multiplatform shooters arrive in retail with Wii Destroy All Humans, Patapon, and Lost: Via Domus.

Between God of War: Chains of Olympus, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Army of Two, and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, there are an unusual number of top-tier releases set for March this year. This last week of February is no slouch either, given that it sees the birth of multiple new franchises, including Frontlines: Fuel of War, Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, and Patapon (Lack of Subtitle).

Though THQ canned the PlayStation 3 version of Frontlines, players can step into the near-future open-world shooter and fight for control of the world's diminishing natural resources on the PC and the Xbox 360 this week. For shooter fans who like their fiction but not the near-futuristic setting of Frontlines, Spark Unlimited's Turning Point: Fall of Liberty arrives on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Published by Codemasters, Turning Point is set in an alternate-history 1950s in which the Allies lost World War II and Nazis have invaded America.

The final notable new intellectual property of the week is Patapon for the PlayStation Portable. With a visual style reminiscent of LocoRoco, the game combines real-time strategy and rhythm-game conventions with a budget price tag of $19.99.

Beyond franchise-starters, this week sees a number of spin-offs as well. THQ brings its Destroy All Humans! franchise to the Wii with Big Willy Unleashed. A PlayStation 2 version had been planned, but the publisher announced its cancellation at the same time it killed the PS3 Frontlines. Meanwhile, TV megahit Lost gets an interactive spin-off, Lost: Via Domus, for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. On a similar titular note, Capcom's Lost Planet: Extreme Condition finds its way to the PS3 this week, over a year after the game originally arrived on the Xbox 360.

For gamers who don't feel like making the trek out to the store, Nintendo is bringing the Nintendo 64 game Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards as well as the TurboGrafx-16 shooter Psychosis to the Wii's Virtual Console. Kirby will sell for the standard Nintendo 64 game rate of 1,000 Wii points ($10), whereas Psychosis will hit the usual TG-16 price point of 600 Wii points ($6). Meanwhile, Microsoft is releasing the Japanese arcade and Dreamcast top-down shooter Trigger Heart Exelica on the Xbox Live Arcade for 800 Microsoft points ($10) this Wednesday.

Frontlines seems like a fun game from the multiplayer demo. I really am hoping for turning point though. its got a neat premise, but ive heard almost nothing about what multiplayer has to offer.

However, ive got to correct ctg867 on Lost Planet. Yes it is a great game and its nice to see it being released new at a low price, but the PS3 lost planet is the worst rated version yet. I saw the review on IGN and they said the graphics were downgraded, there are next to no water physics, the game slows down whenever more than 5 enemies get on screen, there is no payoff for getting coins, multiplayer games can lag out with just 2 people, etc. There were also reader comments that said that it was inferior as well. It makes me sad that they didnt work too hard on it

Frontlines and Turning Point are both decent games games from everything I hear, have read, and what I've played from the demos. If you really want a semi tactical modern FPS or a WWII inspired shooter, then pick one of them up. Though I wouldn't even consider buying Lost, since the show doesn't impress me, and I doubt a crappy game with decent graphics will change anything.

If you liked Lost Planet, but only have a PS3, I guess this is your week. Looks and plays a lot better then the 360 (and especially the PC) version, and it only cost $40, as compared to a full priced game at $60. I really enjoyed the demo, and I liked the game on 360. If you've played the game or demo before, and like it at all, I recommend picking up the full game, definitely.

Though whats the most important thing on this list? PATAPON!!!! Honestly, if you have a PSP, and you don't buy Patapon, you may no longer consider yourself a gamer, end of story.

And the GH3 guitars for Wii/PS3 come out this week? Are they going to be native wireless? Or are they going to be USB dongle wireless? Has the 360 one already come out? Anyway, if you're looking for a guitar, either get this one or the one that Nyko is putting out, which are both wireless. Don't waste your money on that pathetic Rock Band guitar, which is complete crap. The flicker sucks, the whammy sucks, the buttons aren't as responsive, and it's wired. The two new features, the solo buttons and the effects switch, are completely useless. Trust me, DO NOT BUY THE ROCK BAND GUITARS, THEY ARE GARBAGE. Not to mention the fact that they literally become garbage, since so many of them break or loose sensitivity or quality.

Frontlines has a lot of potenial. I played b oth the Single Player and Multiplayer demos, and the single player campaign from teh demo is....well...eh...its another military based FPS, but the Multiplayer...could be incredible. If you can manage to get 50 people in a match for big battles loaded with Vechs and Drones, on man Frontlines could be a great alternative to Battlefield 2.

Frontlins wasn't bad going by the demo, but it didn't seem like it did anything new...might have a look when it's on special.

Still not sure about Turning Point........

Patapon demo was genius though....I'll be grabbing that the second I see it.

I hope Turning Point is at least a decent and fun game. I have been interested in it, and ATM I pretty disappointed, after hearing how bad the demo was.
