EA mines Tiberium

A Command & Conquer spin-off is being developed at EA's LA studio and is due for release in autumn 2008.

Last week, speculation was rife as to whether EA was on the verge of officially confirming the next installment in its long-running Command & Conquer series would return to the first-person shooter genre. Pulling the trigger on that announcement today, Electronic Arts has revealed a new franchise based on the Command & Conquer universe--Tiberium. Named after the energy-providing alien crystals of the C&C games, the first title in the series is already well into development.

The first game, simply called Tiberium, is described as being a mix of "tactical action and visceral first-person shooting." Gamers step into the shoes of Commander Ricardo Vega, exploring an alien tower over the wasteland, which was once the Mediterranean Sea. The tower, believed to be a dormant relic of the Third Tiberium War, turns out to be the base of a planned alien invasion. As all hell breaks loose, Vega finds himself on the front lines of the battle for the planet.

Tiberium will have both single and multiplayer modes and has already been in preproduction for two years. Mike Verdu, general manager at EA Los Angeles, comments, "We are growing Tiberium from a simple backdrop to a fully realized universe with its own unique, hybrid squad-based shooter gameplay."

Tiberium is currently expected in autumn 2008 and will be coming to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Nobody bash renegade. I still play it, also there is a freeware version of APB (A Path Beyond) Which is a total conversion of Renegade using Red Alert units and stuff. Good stuff if you're bored

A bunch of you keep banging up Renegade, but I thought it was fine. The multiplayer made less sence than a nickel, but it was fun from my (short) experience with it. Give "Tiberium" time, and I'm sure EA will pull through with both gameplay and name. I mean, the C&C games to their name were pretty good, weren't they? And Crysis was developed under their wing, and look how much praise THAT got.
My point is, don't jump the gun. EA isn't what it used to be, but they're still shooting out a few good ones every now and again. Army of Two looks nice (although I haven't had a look in a while), and NHL 08 was their best sports game in over 5 years. Who knows, maybe we're seeing the beginning of a renaissance...

    |-|oly smokes! I thought Renegade would have been their last shooter. I sure hope they'll keep the old Command and Conquer gametype for multiplayer. Hopefully, Command and Conquer: Tiberium, will just be a working name until they can think of something better. Let's see, first was just Command and Conquer, or Command and Conquer Tiberian dawn, however you wish to view it. Then Tiberian Sun. Tiberium Wars. Renegade. Maybe they should just call this Renegade 2 or something.

Huh!?! Why did they come up with such a lame and uncreative word as the main title used to describe this spin-off first-person shooter of the C&C? So uncreative & typical of EA. You DON'T just get lazy and try to describe a particular franchise in vain with a word that is the term for the crystal in the C&C world, do you!!?!

Game sounds like its going to have a fairly intensive strategy element in it. Hope its seemless enough to not distract from the action.

Sounds good....I remember Renegade, also remember how delayed it was (but thats no shock it WAS a Westwood game)

    Could be cool.
