Splinter Cell Double Agent detailed, previewed

Superspy will work for both NSA and terrorists as "man on the inside"; PS2, Xbox, PC, GameCube, and Xbox 360 versions confirmed for spring '06; first trailer, screens inside.

Yesterday, Ubisoft revealed the new name of the upcoming chapter in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series. Besides the Double Agent subtitle, yesterday's news included the vague fact that the game would be coming in spring 2006 to "consoles and PC," and a brief glimpse into the game's now-not-so-supersecret plot. Today, the company came clean on the true meaning behind the name, and detailed some of its gameplay and platforms.

In addition to the PC, said consoles due for some springtime spying include the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and yes...the Xbox 360. Each platform will also have its own original multiplayer content, though online play was not detailed. The game is currently being developed in a collaboration between Ubisoft's Montreal, Shanghai, and Annecy, France, studios.

SC: Double Agent

Sam Fisher is a bad, bad man...

As a double agent, gamers will not only have to answer to the National Security Administration, but also to some nefarious terrorists hiding out in the States. There will be tasks set forth from each group, and Fisher will have to find a happy medium between doing his job for the NSA and playing along with the bad guys. If he kills too many members of the terrorist organization, he may give away his allegiance too early. But if he waits too long, their plans might come to fruition and millions of unknowing citizens will die.

Missions will take place all over the world, including Asia, Africa, and the US, in a variety of environments. Fisher will not only dive underwater, trudge through sandstorms, and stealthily sneak through fog and smoke, but he'll also take the plunge as a skydiver.

Today's news is a relief for Xbox 360 owners, who did not see Double Agent (then simply Splinter Cell 4) for the 360 on the company's recent financial report. However, there is still no word on the rumored PlayStation 3 version.

MGS4 looks cool and all, but I like more realism in my games. Honestly I get tired of going after giant mechanized tank after giant mechanized tank. Cant wait to get for 360.

Ever heard of System Wars? I love Splinter Cell and I hope they at least port it to the Playstation 3. It wouldin't really suprise me though considering CT came out on just about every console.

The 360 version will most likely be a more polished version of the PC version like COD2 was and the Xbox version will be the same but with toned down graphics. PS2 and Gamecube ones will again be the worst. PS3, probably but be just like the 360 version.

I'm the furthest thing from a fanboy i want to see all 3 consoles succeed i'm not the one wishing failure on a particular company. I'd just like if nonsense such as people looking at 2 screens that look 100% the same then some sony fanboy go as far as to point out a single line or a single spot on the wall so they can say THERE THE PS3 is better. I've seen similar trailers and screens and people still suggest that one is better than the other. This is probably just me out of frustration finally deciding to put the shoe on the other foot so to speak.

I've just gotten tired of people that without any information other than a killzone and mgs4 rendered in realtime scene suggest the ps3 is the better of the 2. And sony making all these ridiculous claims that they overpower the 360 which I'll tell you from the get go without the ps3 being released is a complete and utter lie.

People were saying how mgs4 scene showed is only capable on the ps3 then hideo kojima (metal fear creator himself) told everyone that isn't true the same thing could be made on the 360, but better if he wanted to. You have people making ridiculous statements such as THIS PS3 screenshot looks better than THAT xbox360 screenshot or omg this ps3 trailer looks better than that xbox360 trailer so stupid. They both look equally impressive and I know better than some that in order for people like me or you (the ones buying the consoles and the games) to get the possible gaming experience out of our consoles there needs to be healthy competition out there for sony or else that'll be bad for the industry in general. Naturally tho of course you have alot of people hoping the 360 fails not aware that if the 360 fails and microsoft decides to throw in the towel on the gaming industry (which is highly unlikely) that'll be the biggest blow the gaming industry will suffer in a long time. Both consoles need to succeed, but i was just a bit annoyed that sony was making all these claims that they are more powerful without showing proof and every is buying into it and wishing the 360 to fail.

Exactly, the only way one could truly compare the console's power is if they've already all been released. Those who jump to conclusions too quickly (i.e. Optimusv2) are reacting foolishly. Hell, for all we know, the Revolution might be the one that out-performs the competition. We'll just have to wait and see, you dirty fanboys.
