TGS '07: Namco Bandai embraces Active Life

Publisher working on new fitness-themed game also shows off Soulcaliber IV, Ace Combat 6, and Time Crisis 4.

TOKYO--Developers for the Nintendo Wii seem determined to get gamers up and off the sofa while they play games. First there was Wii Sports, although that may be relatively docile compared to Wii Fit, which was announced at this year's E3 Media & Business Summit. Now, there's an even more energetic Wii game coming to the console in 2008--with a working title of Active Life: Athletic World for the Western world.

Called Family Trainer: Athletic World in Japan, the Wii-exclusive game uses a special custom mat controller and will feature a series of minigames for one or two players. Namco Bandai demonstrated some of these minigames at the company's offices in Shinagawa as part of this year's Tokyo Game Show.

The first was called River Rapid, and gamers use the Wii Remote like an oar to paddle left or right, which steers the boat through the rapids. Other games shown briefly included a snowboarding game, a two-player log jumping game, and a barrel jumping game. Players use the mat to run in place, which makes characters move around.

Namco Bandai also showed off some new levels of Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation and a trailer of the weapon-based brawler Soulcaliber IV. The new Soulcaliber IV video introduced a brand-new character, Hilda, who was dressed head to toe in armor. The title is being developed for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, and is due for release in 2008. Other games shown in the presentation video were Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, and Time Crisis 4.

Soul Calibur on 360/PS3. Good. Soul Calibur on Wii. Another mediocre third party game. Anyway, Time Crisis 4 is looking to be pretty decent as well. Some good news I guess.

I also thought Project Sylpheed was awesome, for what it's worth.

I used to think the Ace Combat demo was cool, but I liked Project Sylpheed so much more. I'm surprised nobody liked Project Sylpheed all that much. Anyhow, I'm not a big fan of Soul Caliber, but I definitely have some friends that are going to absolutely love SC4. Also, I'm glad their working on Time Crisis 4 for the console, but I still feel the light gun issue hasn't been solved; I don't want to stick extra crap to my TV, I already have the Wii sensor bar, and with TC4 I'll need 4 additional objects glued to my TV, not to mention more cords to go everywhere. Meh, I just hope Beautiful Katamari is enough to pacify me.

wii has a good party games.........xbox 360 and ps3 has a good hardcore games....if u want to go exercises outside that your choice...they never give a d**M about u....but don't bother the gamers who has a different persepective about gaming solution...

The wii will be the downfall of video games if all these developers keep chasing the jogging game dollars.

If I want to exercise I'll go outside, I don't need to spend $300 on a phoney game console to pretend I'm walking down a trail.

Really looking forward to Soul Calibur on Xbox 360. The trailers/pics look amazing!

I'd love for 360 to start getting some light gun games. Looks like I'll be grabbing Time Crisis 4 on PS3.
