Soul Calibur returns on the 360

The classic is back and ready for download via the Xbox Live Arcade; Echochrome hits EU PlayStation Network.

The Namco Bandai 3D fighter Soul series began in 1996, with the release of the arcade game Soul Edge. The popularity of the series then quickly grew when Soul Calibur was released to critical acclaim--including a 10 from GameSpot--and continued to grow with Soul Calibur II and Soul Calibur III. Now it's about to expand again with the upcoming release of Soul Calibur IV for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on August 1.

Presumably because of this, Namco has decided to cash in on the anticipation and give fans something to do in the interim--play Soul Calibur via the Xbox Live Arcade. It will feature leaderboards for every mode and character, as well as local multiplayer in Versus mode. The game itself has been remade with high-definition graphics, HDTV support, and, of course, achievements.

Also coming to the Xbox Live Arcade this week are additional trivia questions and facts for the recently released Wits & Wagers quiz game. These 280 questions will provide up to 10 hours of additional gameplay and will be available in local and online games. In local games, the package will be used automatically, but while online, you will be matched up with other people who have the same question packs you do.

Both of these will be released on July 2 on the Live Arcade. Soul Calibur will be released at 9.00 a.m. GMT (1.00 a.m. PDT). It will be available for 800 Microsoft points and is rated T for Teen. The Wits & Wagers downloadable content will cost 320 Microsoft points.

Other downloadable releases this week include the highly anticipated PlayStation 3 puzzler Echochrome and two titles for the Wii. Echochrome will be downloadable via the PlayStation Network store from July 3. The 3D puzzle game has the player turning the camera angle around a series of mazes so that by using optical illusions, problems can be solved. Gamers will also be able to make, upload, and download user-made maps.

One title will also be added this week to Nintendo's Virtual Console on the Wii--Fatal Fury 2. Fatal Fury 2 is a fighting game based on the Japanese anime Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle. It was originally released by SNK for arcade machines along with the Neo Geo CD, Sega Genesis, SNES, and Game Boy platforms. Fatal Fury, the original, is already up for grabs on the VC. The sequel will cost 900 Wii points.

Also for the Wii is Magnetica Twist, which is a WiiWare puzzler which can be bought for 1,000 Wii points. Up to four players will be able to play using the Mii characters they have created.

Soul Calibur on the XBLA is awesome, although it's lacking but still worth it

Fantastic game. I hope 4 turns out, but in the meantime this is an excellent opportunity to try out a fighting classic. Score one for XBL.

The framerate on SC is unreal! Even if you already have the DC version it's still more than worth it to get this one. True, there's no mission mode and the only unlockables are the achievements. But even with everything unlocked and the lack of online, it's still one worth getting. And ONI5, only a fool would get rid of the most underappreciated gaming console ever. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever get rid of a Dreamcast...no matter how many other games come out for 360 or PS3.

It would be nice to be able to play that game. Too bad I missed out on it when I still had a Dreamcast.

Ok, I got this and played. It brought back some good Dreamcast memories. Still holds up though, in this day of graphics > gameplay. Now, what I want is at least a DEMO for SC4..... Anything? Even another SC4 movie would make the wait less painful.

Played SC3 and was extremely disappointed with the storyline...it's non -existant. Yeah I know its just a fighting game but geez, don't make a sorry attempt at one then. Refuse to get SC4 although it should do well since people like it

I was really looking forward to Soul Caliber on Live Arcade but everything is already unlocked. Spending time unlocking all the characters and weapons etc. was grewat fun for me and I spent more time doing that than playing the game with friends. Not sure if ill get this anymore.

Aw Echodrome looks soo good! To mrklorox: I'm sure because the reports states "high-definition graphics, [and] HDTV support," the implication is the graphics are better and are playable at high definition resolutions. I can't see any high-definition graphics being played on a SDTV. That just doesn't make sense.

"The game itself has been remade with high-definition graphics"

Is this accurate or did they just up the output resolution to 720p?

This is one more reason to get rid of my DreamCast if more games like this come out.

Dammit. If they only had XBL multiplayer this would be one of the greatest game-relate things I have heard. SC rules. Anyone who hasn't had the privilege of playing this on the DC need to check it out.

A great opportunity for gamers to experience one of the greatest fighting games ever made, especially for those that never got to try the Dreamcast version. While I might not get this (my DC still works) its still a great thing for everyone!
