Root Beer Tapper slings suds tomorrow

Arcade classic from Midway hits Xbox Live tomorrow; all-you-can-drink retro gaming for 400 Microsoft points ($5).

This week's offering for Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays is a hump-day happy hour, as Root Beer Tapper is sliding across the bar and onto Xbox 360s. The game is set to premiere on February 7 at 1 a.m. PST for 400 Microsoft points ($5).

In the game, players assume the role of a bartender in a number of watering holes patronized by punk rockers, cowboys, and even aliens. Gamers must keep their customers happy by making sure their mugs are full. More points can be earned through tips, and two players can team up or go head-to-head in cooperative and versus modes locally or over Xbox Live.

Root Beer Tapper was released by Bally Midway in 1984 after the original, Tapper, included branding from beer-purveyor Budweiser and was seen as an advertisement for booze to minors.

Root Beer Tapper is rated E for Everyone and is the first of the new wave of Xbox Live Arcade games recently announced.

Not mad at this one. I still like to play retro games on handheld systems mostly, but games like these are good family choices or "party games" for social gatherings. They're easy to learn and fun to play while you talk trash to your friends. And it's only five dollars.

I retract my statement... this is hands-down the best retro release for XBLA. At least until they get Burgertime on there. Where is Burgertime?

Only Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga appeared in more arcades. You must have lived in a cave.

My friend and I are currently on a highscore battle for this game (however ours is the budweiser tapper) on a rom on his laptop. I guess we are going to have to battle it out on xbox live leaderboards now lol

The ORIGINAL Tapper in the arcade sported a Budweiser draft handle and you served BEER to the customers. Loved the game, and used to play it all the time. After receiving alot of flack from consumers about "marketing beer to kids" the game was re-released as ROOT BEER Tapper. While there's nothing like a cold A&W, I would really like to see someone bring back the Bud version once again... give it whatever rating they need, but bring back the ORIGINAL.

We need better games than this. I won't buy it because any retro game I have gotten gets boring after like 5 minutes.
