Paperboy gets tossed this week

Atari classic featuring paper-peddling protagonist will be available this Wednesday for 400 Microsoft points ($5).

Following last week's release of Root Beer Tapper on Xbox Live Marketplace, Microsoft is releasing another arcade classic revolving around an unsung profession this Wednesday--Paperboy.

The game, originally released in 1984, featured a bicycle-handlebar-shaped controller that was used to control a neighborhood newspaper-delivery boy. As gamers tried to keep customers happy with well-placed newspapers, they could also earn points by preventing thieves from breaking into homes, knocking over tombstones, or breaking the windows of nonsubscribing houses.

The Xbox 360 version will be updated with a new cooperative multiplayer mode, as well as "modernized" audio and "new artwork." Paperboy will be available February 14 at 1 a.m. PST for 400 Microsoft Points ($5). For more information, read GameSpot's previous coverage.

Lol, the best picture and comment for ANY Gamespot news story.

I plan on purchasing this game. The game was excellent on the NES and it will be even better on the 360 with Online.

I'm surprised no one's made a GTA-style version of Paperboy. Just think of how fun that could be.

Breaking other Paperboys' legs, bullying customers into subscribing...

    Ah, Paperboy...good times, good times...

The people at XBOX Live! Arcade aren't stupid. They're not going to give you five games in one week so you can buy the top two while the other three don't sell at all. Even the movie and music industries stagger release dates, so it's sensible that XBLA does the same.

Sony has a pretty good library of older games, so I'm sure they'll get in the mix eventually too. In the meantime, I hope that the games on XBLA and Virtual Console aren't mutually exclusive. Just because a game like Paperboy appears on one system doesn't mean it shouldn't come up on the other. (But if I have to choose between Microsoft's port of the original arcade game and Nintendo's port of the 8-bit console game, my choice is clear.)

    "modernized" audio and "new artwork."

I think "added half a pixel and 2 kbps" is more accurate

Seriously, they should do more with the "modernizing" than they have so far. Still looks 1980 to me... But then again, I'm sure many like it that way.
