Just Cause 2 parachutes into 2008

Eidos announces Just Cause 2 to land on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC this year.

When Just Cause was released in 2006, it took a page out of the book of other favourites in the modern action-adventure genre, and set them within a huge, island-based game world which players could traverse by vehicle or using their character's trusty parachute.

SCi confirmed in an earnings call last year that a sequel to the game was "already in development" and Eidos has today released details of Just Cause 2. The second instalment in the series is being developed by the same team at Avalanche Studios and will be published by Eidos in the second half of 2008.

Rico Rodriguez, the protagonist from the first game, returns again, hot on the tail of a former boss who has taken off with stolen money to a fictitious South Pacific island called Panau, complete with cities, lush jungle, arid desert, and snowcapped mountainous regions. The island draws on influences from throughout the South Pacific and Southeast Asian areas of the world.

Like its predecessor, Just Cause 2 will encourage exploration and free roaming through the massive world--which will be smaller, but more "jam packed" than the first. Eidos says that improvements have been made to enemy artificial intelligence and the missions are set to be more complex and numerous. Rico will also have some new moves, including the ability to move around on vehicles he's landed on using his parachute. There will also be more vehicles available in the game.

While there will be a greater emphasis on real-world physics this time around, gamers will still be able to pull off some of the insane moves from the first game with the parachute and grappling hook at the ready. Both these key items have been upgraded, allowing the player to undertake new tasks and traverse a great deal of the gameworld up in the air.

Just Cause 2 is set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC sometime before the end of this year.

Rico looks more like a Bada$$ in JC2 more than JC1.

I just loved the 1st game... It is so much better than far cry, or other similar games.... It's kind of GTA meets Far Cry, and what could be a poor game is absolutely cool.... The freefall mode is cool, the island is cool, I really dig this game. And also, excellent graphics, with a incredible far clip, weather effects.... It's nice, so I'm really excited to play JC2!!!

I'm pretty excited for this one. I agree that the first game had a lot of flaws, but the over all fun factor was there. I beat the game, just didn't feel the drive to do all the side missions, not even to earn achievements. So hopefully the world will indeed be more fleshed out with a greater variety of things to do. But still, it is a franchise with good potential for fans of open world games such as myself...

Just Cause had a LOT of potential. The demo made me buy the game. However, after a short bit with the game I started to realize it's flaws. BIG FLAWS. The game would freeze all the time. Some times it would refuse to load my saved games. The gameplay was not as tight as it should have been, but was okay. The missions got boring pretty fast.

There are some really cool ideas in play here and I think that if they get the coding right this time they could have a hit on their hands. The protagonist is a little too "cool" for himself, so I don't ever see him being a gaming icon, but his game has great potential.

The first game was garbage, they should just roll the dice on starting a new property, instead of kicking this dead horse another time.

hopefully they add the gameplay element called fun to it. it seemed lacking last title. only reason they made money was cause of their low dev costs, and the fact that people bought it for the sake of its low price.

Ya they still have not released a patch for the 2006 game. I enjoyed this game, Its one of my all time favs, but its a disgrace that these money grubbers did not make a patch for a game with HUGE bugs. Many are truly game breakers. Go take a peek at the forums some time and read the very upset customers who have posted and begged for years for a patch. Then observe the silence of any kind of a response from Avalanche or Eidos. There is none. So sad. Truly a great game but why would anyone give the combo of those two companies a second Chance when its clear that they release a bug ridden pile and offer no support. LOL so in the words of their own games hero Rico, I say "Viva La Revolution." I wont run out to buy it. I will observe to see if they make good on a patch for the first game and a patch for this new game in a timely manner. /End Rant

Not too surprising. Hopefully they come out with a better demo to get them some hype and bring the game out at a solid time. Ie: not during the holidays. Hope it's an improvement, and it will end up being a good game.
