Jumper: Griffin's Story Hands-On

Brash's tie-in action game with the new movie of the same name will let you be in several places at once.

Next week will see the theatrical release of Doug Liman's Jumper, an action movie that stars Hayden Christensen as a run-of-the-mill joe who just happens to have the ability to teleport anywhere at any time. Well, not anywhere--that would just be crazy. But he and his fellow jumpers can zip to any place to which they have a line of sight, or anywhere they've been before and can remember via a reminder like a photograph. Unfortunately, a nefarious group called the paladins, led by a platinum-coiffed Samuel L. Jackson, are after the jumpers for reasons not yet explained. The struggle between these two groups will provide the primary conflict in the movie.

Brash Entertainment is prepping the requisite Jumper tie-in action game for release along with the movie, though it doesn't mirror the events in the movie exactly. As the name implies, Jumper: Griffin's Story will place you in the role of Griffin (played by Jamie Bell in the movie), a more experienced jumper-slash-wiseass who serves as a mentor to Christensen's character throughout the film. So the game will be a sort of prequel to the movie--it will feature some locations seen on the big screen and others conceived uniquely for the game itself. Of course, you can expect the usual movie- and comic-related unlockable content to be available in the game as well.

Griffin's Story looks like a straightforward third-person beat-'em-up, save for a couple of neat tricks. The core combat mechanic ties directly in to Griffin's jumping ability; you'll be able to use the four controller face buttons to appear in front of, on either side of, or behind your current opponent. A little red arc will appear on the side (or sides) of your target to indicate which side he's most likely to block on, and these change very rapidly, so figuring out which side to teleport to on the fly gives the combat an action-puzzle feel.

When you've beaten up an opponent enough, you'll sometimes be able to execute what's called a "jump finisher," which involves grabbing the hapless thug, teleporting to some dangerous place in the world, and leaving him to his often grisly fate. This includes dropping your opponent in a desert right before a nuclear bomb test is detonated; trapping him in the front seat of a car moments before it's crushed in a compactor; letting him float in a tank full of sharks; and simply abandoning him to freeze to death atop the Himalayas. These finishers are presented as full-motion video and thus will probably get tiresome after you've seen them a few times, but they're pretty entertaining (and a little disturbing) at first.

Griffin's Story isn't very impressive graphically, but the combat seems like it could be fairly entertaining if it proves to have enough depth over the long haul. Luckily, you'll be able to unlock some new combos that you can chain together, which may keep things from getting repetitive. Both Jumper and Griffin's Story are due out next week.

On the Xbox it doesnt have cel-shading. But it still looks like it belongs on the PS2. XD

The game itself is not all that bad but what about the cel-shading graphics? Its just doesn't fit the game.

I got this game, and it sucks. I don't know how is it on other consoles but on ps2 it's a freaking cel-shaded with a poor cartoony style that could pass for a better version of ps one game. These screenshots are not from the ps2 game.

I saw the review for the 360 version of this game and it got a 4.5. Personally, judging from the trends Im seeing, the Wii version will probably be worse. Now dont get me wrong: I have a Wii and its awesome, but developers seem to work much less on the Wii version of a multiplatform game. Take CoD 3 for instance. iT was still good, but they should have delayed it and released it when they could add online features. EA got online for MoH Heroes 2 , and I know that treyarch could have done the same for CoD 3.

OMG I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS GAME!!!!! It looks so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so hyped....... NOT!!!!!!!!
I wonder who, just WHO is gonna even CONSIDER buying this lame excuse for a game. when will people learn that movie tie-ins are just a way to lose money not make any?!! Star Wars is probably the only movie-tie in that was actually entertaining and successful! Hell next thing you know they are making Lego Star Wars and that is probably better than this crap!

The problem with Game / Movie tie-ins is that the developer uses ZERO imagination, all they have to do is simply make the game with as many Movie relevant moments as possible, its almost like an artist tracing around an original painting instead of using his IMAGINATION and creating something original & fresh!!

The problem with games from movie is that the game comes out before the movie, therefore, sucks. Best thing for game producers is to wait until the movie comes out and find what audience think of the movie. If it does well, create the game. Take time to develop it. Find out if people think there was something that could've been added / removed in the movie and develop the game from that. Maybe the game could be better than the movie.

Fully prepared to watch this one to "jump" into the abyss. My girlfriend want to see the movie, and this will be the only tie I'll ever have to this title. Because I do whatever my girlfriend says.

Until I see the movie, I will say that this is another half-assed attempt to cash in on a franchise that will not be able to "jump" away from its ultimate and early demise. They can't even take the time to integrate the "jump finisher" - or what I'll call a "jump-ality" - into actual game play. They have to use FMV. So, are they going to set it up to where you can use a different "jump-ality" for everyone, or is Random Thug A and Random Thug B going to have their own "jump-ality" to save on production time and money? If it were part of the core experience, I would be a little more interested, but I figure this game will fall flat on its face.

Unfortunately... in my opinion the movie kind of sucks... (corny, and poorly executed). Actually...it really sucks. Trust me, this movie was /not/ made with a story in mind. They had a good idea, made a cool trailer, and then made a movie with little effort in an attempt (which is working) to make them money.

But maybe they will do the impossible and make the game better then the movie. Theoretically, the idea behind the movie would make a good game. However, theoretically, the idea could have made a good /movie/ too....

History has taught us that Movie - Game tie-ins always fail, Lego Star Wars is a different scenario as its been made with sheer fun in mind as opposed to staying true to the actuall story in terms of seriousness

Is anyone going to look past the fact that the graphics might be bad and see that it could have a good storyline. It's just that theres been alot of talk about how crap the screenshots look, come on guys, who remembers pong. funnest game, probably not the best graphics ever. Anyway, my point is that it might be a good game.

in saying that, i havnt played it and probably wont, but i plan on seeing the movie ... when it comes out on dvd (or maybe at the movies, havnt decided yet)
