id not Rage-ing in '09

CEO Todd Hollenshead tells GameTrailers his studio's open-world postapocalyptic actioner won't arrive on the Mac, PC, PS3, or Xbox 360 this year.

Until it issues a definitive proclamation, id Software traditionally responds to inquiries about a game's release date with the mantra "When it's done." However, this past weekend saw an exception to that rule when Todd Hollenshead let slip that the Doom developer's upcoming game Rage won't arrive in 2009.

"No, it won't be out this year," the id CEO stated flatly in a GameTrailers TV interview posted last Friday. Geoff Keighley, the show's host, later confirmed the negative statement via his Twitter feed.

The news comes as a blow to those anticipating Rage, which was first shown to the public at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in 2007. In development for the Mac, PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, the not-quite-open-world action game will let players drive around a postapocalyptic hellscape, Road Warrior-style.

Instead of said film's mohawked motorcyclists in seatless chaps, the game features bloodthirsty mutants who roam the wastelands between human settlements. To fight them off, players will be able to mount all manner of weapons on their vehicles, as outlined in GameSpot's QuakeCon preview.

With Rage not due until 2010 at the earliest, only one game bearing the id label will arrive this year. The suburban-Dallas-based studio is executive-producing Wolfenstein, the relaunch of the Nazis-meet-demons franchise in development at Madison, Wisconsin-based Raven Software. id is also in the early stages of development on Doom 4, the latest installment in its genre-establishing shooter series.

    Oh well.

Can't really complain considering Borderlands is arriving before Halloween. Not that they're that similar, but they look as though they'll satisfy the same interests, and Borderlands looks to be a better game.

Still can't wait for Rage though...

Doom 4 better not be like part 3 because that was boring as hell! I would rather see them updating Doom's basic *left right* shooting to todays FPS standards and bring back all the old demons and some new, update there looks to todays standards of awesomeness and bring it back to the mindless demon shooter that it was! not the *scare moment* game that it became that was crap.

"if any of you people truly think the next MS console will have Blu-Ray you are truly mistaken why would MS make a console were they would have to pay royaltys to sony for every disc they make "

For the same reason Sony make laptops & Desktop PC's and having to pay MS for every single unit they make, TO MAKE MONEY! Blu Ray has obviously taken off and has been accepted as the 'Next Medium' therefore MS will simply follow suite. BR isnt really a major requirement at the moment, but as this game shows, it will become neccesary to hold game data (excluding mind numbing FMV).

    @matt
He's probably saying it was the first "good" FPS out there, making it the grandaddy of all FPS's.
And yes, Gamespot is wrong, its coming out this year.

Since when was Doom a "genre founder"? To say that in the same sentence as referencing Wolfenstein and to not realise Wolfenstein 3D came first is sacriligeous Shame on you gamespot Yes I'm old

I can't tell what he said in the video
    It was either -
HOST: "So we are probably looking at NEXT YEAR release right? not this year?". ID GUY: "No, we'll be out this year."
    or
ID GUY: "No, it wont be out this year."
But I can't tell which!? Either way i don't care i have enough games to play.....

Why wouldn't microsoft want Blu-ray? You can have like 60 something layer disk! maybe they should do some reasearch on an UBER CD-Rom Format or some kind of ultra FLOPPY.
