Highlander officially quickening PS3, 360, PC

Following numerous leaks, Eidos announces its forthcoming fantasy-action game, inspired by the film and television series of the same name.

In summer 1986, Highlander premiered in theaters. Some 22 years, four sequels, two television series, two animated series, and two games later, the franchise is now returning to the game world. Following months of leaks, today Eidos Interactive finally officially announced that it will publish Highlander for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The publisher's parent company, SCi Entertainment, acquired rights to the franchise in 2004.

In the new game, players assume the role of Owen MacLeod, who may--or may not be--a relative of film hero Conor MacLeod and TV hero Duncan MacLeod. Like his celluloid and video counterparts, MacLeod begins as an everyday man--this time in Roman-occupied Gaul--who discovers he's immortal when he's briefly killed. After he rises again, the game follows him through various eras as he squares off against other sword-wielding immortals who kill each other the only way they can: beheading.

Highlander will also see MacLeod squaring off against a new nemesis, not the Kurgan (pictured) from the original film. He'll also have a mentor immortal, Methos, who will train him to use his powers (collectively called the Quickening) just as Sean Connery's character first did. These powers will let MacLeod channel fire and electricity through his body, disarm opponents by letting them jam their weapons into him, and escape by jumping from a great height--and surviving. Combat in the game will focus on melee weapons, including such sword types as the claymore, katana, and twin gladius, and will have destructible environments.

Highlander is being developed by French Widescreen Games (Dead to Rights) and will use the Unreal 3 Engine. It is being written by David Abramowitz, the show runner for the Highlander TV series. It is set for release sometime later this year.

I have to say the Ps3 has converted me to a console player! I just wish more games would allow you to create your own character. I really don't care to play some one else character, I like being able to choose how my character looks their strengths and weaknesses, what kind of weapon they use. If they are a he or a she. Are they good or evil in the way they interact with their world. This game Highlander looks cool, but it would be so much more if I could create my own Immortal. I also wish for some a game company would own up to the fact that men are women are different and playing a male vs. a female would give different advantages or disabilities. Come on Edios you can do it!

After Batman:AA I have no doubt that Edios will do great things with this franchise...

It will be a third-person action adventure that spans over 2000 years, giving you a chance to explore feudal Japan, medieval Scotland, a futuristic vision of New York and Pompeii before the historical volcanic eruption.

Similarly to the film, the aim will be to journey around the world and meet other immortal warriors in battle, lopping off their heads to win. You'll have the choice of Katana, Claybore or Double to use, and be able to use various techniques to overpower your foe - like Resurrection, Chi Balance, Fireblade, Wind Fury, Stone Armour and other powered-up special attacks.

I've been looking forward to this game since it was announced so I hope it turns out pretty good and not just the result of a company trying to cash in on a popular franchise.

...huh...if they do this in a somewhat Bushido Blade style of combat, it could be extremely fun.

Didn't they release a few Highlander games a few years ago and they were terrible? By far the worst one was based on the animated series and stared Quentin MacLeod.

Let's just hope they don't screw everything and ignore the Highlander mythos by saying people are descendants of other immortals or crap.

Tough to make a game based around a character who can't die unless he has his head cut off. And it can't be assumed that every enemy will know to cut your head off to kill you. Unless of courser you only fight other immortals, but how they will fill in the time between these fights will be tough to make challenging. It may end up like the wolverine game; fun, but easy.
