Eidos throws down DS Gauntlet

Classic hack-and-slash '80s game series officially coming to Nintendo's handheld this year.

Back in February, Eidos registered a new Gauntlet game with the US Entertainment Software Rating Board, and although the listing was quickly removed from the database, it was too late--the cat was out of the bag.

Now, Eidos has come clean about Gauntlet for the DS and has officially announced the title. Simply called Gauntlet, the new game will be a remake of Midway’s 1985 arcade classic hack-and-slash title.

Gauntlet takes place in a fantasy world, with 40 maps set over three realms, and gamers can choose to play as an elf, warrior, wizard, or valkyrie--each with its own strengths, weaknesses, and special abilities.

As well as single-player mode, there will be a four-player Wi-Fi co-op mode that will use the DS microphone to allow allies to communicate. A range of competitive multiplayer games are also included, such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Treasure Horde.

Gauntlet for the DS is being developed by Backbone Entertainment, a division of Foundation 9 Entertainment, and is set for release "later this year."

In the meantime, those desperate for a Gauntlet fix can download Gauntlet from Xbox Live Arcade and Gauntlet II from the PlayStation Network.

zennioparty, that is completely untrue. Granted there are only like 2 attributes, Strength, and Speed. But i have wasted enough quarters to know that there are actually strategic differences when you are playing with others that require different party orders depending on what you face ahead. That said, they really better add some updated game modes because i wont dare spend more than 5 bucks on a plain gauntlet port.

I also hope that there is something more indepth with the characters. While I have loved the games, the one thing that has bothered me is that.... THERE IS NO DIFFRENCE IN WHAT CHARACTER YOU CHOOSE. i think that this game could be taken to a whole DIFFRENT level if they created some real diffrenses with charaters. It would definitely add to the depth of the game.

Man I used to love Gauntlet on the NES. I still play it once in a while on Midway's Arcade Treasures 2 for GC. A DS version would so rock!

I'd like to see a new Gauntlet for XBLA or PSN with online co-op; that'd be awesome.

I'm surprised no one has said Eidos eats kittens or something yet so I'll say it, Eidos is evil.

This actually sounds good. And the Gauntlet games haven't been good in years.
