GC 2008: Far Cry 2 Console Impressions

We got to see a new mission from Ubisoft's promising open-world shooter, as well as the console version's level editor.

Far Cry 2 has received its fair share of attention over the last 12 months, but with the game finally going into submission for the consoles this week, Leipzig may be its last major showing. For that reason, we couldn't help but swing by the Ubisoft booth at the Games Convention to see how the nearly finished game is looking. Thankfully it's more promising than ever, especially now that we've seen the level editor functionality as well.

Ubisoft booted up the Xbox 360 version to show off a mission labelled Andre, which apparently comes 20 percent of the way into the game. We saw a mission briefing take place, something that the developers say will change from player to player depending on their previous actions in the game. As an open-world shooter, you're free to tackle the core missions as you like, which means you're also free to take on side missions at any point. One such side mission was phoned in as we watched the developers playing, and a woman called Flora Guillen requested some help attacking a nearby base. The developers opened up their map, jumped in a boat, and headed down the river to meet her.

Most of the vehicles in Far Cry 2 will have mounted weapons, allowing you to stop whatever you're driving and take out any pursuers. While on foot you can carry up to three weapons plus your machete, and as weapons degrade over time you'll often need to swap them out. It helps to know where the ammo dumps are, so they're drawn out for you on the map, and you have the choice of using them to stock up or using explosives to blow them up. If you blow up a supply of rifle ammo, for example, the explosion will send bullets flying in all directions and killing any surrounding enemies.

While this demo didn't show us anything we hadn't seen before, it was an encouraging sign of how the console version is coming along. The developer says that the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC versions have been developed from the same core build, so they'll all share the same features. While we didn't see the PS3 version, it's claimed that the aliasing on Sony's machine outperforms that of the 360, while on the PC it's all dependent on the specifications of your machine. The minimum specs for the PC are high, but it's easily one of the benchmark titles for this coming year and, thankfully, holds up well on the 360.

Perhaps the most important thing we saw at Leipzig was the map editor, which will also ship on all versions. You're given a half a square kilometer plot of land from which you can shape hills, create roads, and scatter vegetation. It looked easy to do all three from the demo we were given, as the vegetation will automatically disappear if you place a road or other conflicting feature in the map. The custom maps will work in multiplayer games only, so you have to create spawn points for people. You'll apparently be able to share your creations on Xbox Live, the PlayStation Network, and the PC, while players can rate how you did once they've played them. We also spotted one other juicy piece of information in the demo--there will be 'platform-specific content' coming in the future, so expect some Xbox 360 exclusives postrelease.

Far Cry 2 is shaping up as one of our most anticipated shooters of the year, and the map editor is sure to add to the game's appeal. The game was submitted to Sony this week for approval, and it will go through the same procedure for Microsoft next week. There's still no solid release date, but it's looking increasingly likely that we'll actually see the game before the year is out.

Too bad I'm no rich dude... This looks promising... But I already bought a game this month... And I could only afford 1 a month...

Anyway I'm going to buy the PS3 version... Because I don't have an xbox 360...

Cant wait for this game. I have a xbox 360 and a PS3 and going to have to get this game on the Xbox 360 just for live and I much prefer the controller for FPS games.
I never really play my PS3, cant find any good games for it. I have all the supposed AAA titles and they are all a disappointment well not GT4 that game is sweet. Mgs4 is a very boring game I thought but then I never played any MSG game before.

"Just give it time, people, you will be begging your mommies for a PS3. Besides, look at MGS4. That looked and played a hundred times better than anything on the 360."

How much more god**** time do they need? Gonna have to wait until 2010 before I get a PS3..maybe by then they will get something that "showsoff" the potential with it. MGS4 - Too bad it's 90% cinematics. Great game but what you said is going a little far.

A map editor. That convinced me to get this one. I love level editing and I don't mean how it's done in Halo 3, but real level editing. I hated MS for not allowing users to build maps on the PC and then export them to their 360 in games like the latest Unreal. And about the console wars between 360 and PS3. I'd usualy give PS3 a nickname, but that is not allowed here so we keep it to PS3. My expectations are that in time the PS3 will be slightly more powerful.

ok they will be exsacally the same what are you talking about full potential MGS4 yes it was good but you've never played the likes of gears of war or halo their excellent games. my argument is yes MGS is a cinimatic games too much cinimatics thats why Fable 2 has only has less than five minutes of game time yes the cinematic are good and pretty action packs but at the cost of getting board. THE GAME WILL BE NO DIFFERENT ON EACH CONSOLE THEY HAVE THE SAME HARDWARE SPECS THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS BLU-RAY (I KNOW THAT MY FRIENDS INCLUDING ME DON'T EVEN HAVE ANY BLU-RAY DVD SSO THE ONLY ADVANTAGE IS THAT YOU CAN FIT THE GAME ON ONE DISK) AND IS ALREADY WIRELESS. whilst the xbox has more adult games and a better online thing (does cost though _)... right now i've got that sorted out (like FatChuwawa said lame ps3 excuses) i never even knew that the console where getting this thing............. more aguments. guess who says that it might proform better on sonys machine let me geuss SONY said that!!!!.. wooow posibly xbox exclusive content. ps3 content will also be availiblr to xbox as well. i might sound like a xbox fan boy its just that i hate ps3 owners who are arrogent about the xbox not haveing blu-ray or not having free online

A console's only as good as the games you play for it. All you Xbox junkies only play the good games on Xbox so how the hell would you know how good they are on anything else? Besides all these games are coming out for various platforms so of course we're getting a bunch of ports. They are not gonna build two different games here just so PS3 will get a full potential experience. Thats why SONY is so focused on first party games that are being developed to match up with what PS3 has to offer. Just give it time, people, you will be begging your mommies for a PS3. Besides, look at MGS4. That looked and played a hundred times better than anything on the 360. SO that goes to show you that when developed properly you can make masterpieces on PS3.

ROFL, I've never seen so much damage control on a preview article. Like FatChuwawa said is this SW?? everyone of them has multiple paragraphs how a game that just might look better on the PS3 doesn't matter because _____ (insert defensive excuse). Come on ppl the game looks good and I'm sure it'll be good on both consoles and PC.

really I think that there is barely a difference in graphics for the ps3 or 360. i'd say that the only thing that is better is online play for the 360.whenever i go to my friends house and we play on his ps3 its very laggy and usually times us out of games. If u dont really care for online then this game seems to have enough of a good storyline and map editor to keep u going. i hope i can get this game in november after gears and fallout which i reserved.

The original farcry was amazing, and farcry 2 will be even better. Open world mayhem on a more realistic scale then merc2. And just like all online multiplayer games I'll be buying this for the 360. I own all 3 systems so while I can choose which system I want to play it on my decision isn't based on graphics or fanboy-ism it is however based on reliable online gaming. Maybe more 360 owners have better internet and ps3 owners don't. Because even with fios it doesn't matter because if everyone else is using DSL or something as slow or slower there is still lag. It sucks that you have to spend $50 a year for Live but the service is reliable. And to agree with pauldixon77 there are to many AAA games coming out at the same time. I mean let's say you own more than just an 360 or a ps3 but you own both. It seems like only the game stores realize that people don't have a continuos cash flow to spend on games with deals like double trade in credit when reserving an upcoming game. Who does the gaming industry think is playing there games? Sure the game companies have to make their money bit when you release games like mortal kombat vs DC at $60 who do you think you are. Believe me I'm all for the idea but you need to start realizing that some games aren't worth $60 or even $50. This is a rant so I'll stop there.

wow, this seriously sounds like a history in the making.finally i can forgive and be at peace with ubisoft for thier HAZE blunder and forget everything they did to true FPS gamers out there.Hype or no hype, Far cry 2 is destined for greatness.as for which console is better siuted for far cry....XBOX360 desrves the 'top platform for far cry' position.let me tell everyone here that wars are not won on paper and specs, apparently all sony is good at is showing of their exagerated specs(even if they are true) but when it comes down to which console leave a gamer wasted with sheer pleasure afer hours of gameplay is none other than is xbox.my bro's birthday is comin and i cant think of a better way to disapoint him than to getting him a ps3 for a gift.he'll soon realize that once he's done with MGS4 their is nothing else to show for the ps3.nuff said..

Wow, what a great time to be alive. This fall is going to have so many blockbuster movie releases, as well as about 5 or 6 games. However, PaulDixon77 made a good point. From a marketing stand point this is all pretty retarded. I'm a PC gamer, though I own a 360. The thing is, as much as I would like to buy Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, Far Cry 2, Fable II, Gears of War 2, and Stalker: Clear Skies, I just don't have the money! I'm puzzled as to why all these game publishers want to release their games in this specific time-slot. They could at least wait and release a few in December, before Christmas.
