Little Big Planet tops AIAS noms

Sony Europe's sandbox platformer receives 10 nods for 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, to be handed out Feb. 19 at the DICE Summit in Vegas.

In a bid to become the definitive gaming-awards ceremony, the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences announced in October that it had folded the International Game Developers Association into its Interactive Achievement Awards selection process. As a result of the partnership, the IGDA's 14,000-strong membership base would gain a vote on the "craft" categories of the IAAs.

Today, the AIAS announced the initial fruit of that collaboration, laying out the nominees for its 12th Annual IAAs. Topping the list of this year's nods is Sony's PlayStation 3-exclusive Little Big Planet, which received critical praise from GameSpot upon its release in October. The AIAS gave the sandbox platformer 10 nominations, in categories ranging from Family Game of the Year to Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction to Overall Game of the Year.

Little Big Planet will face stiff competition to take home the AIAS' Game of the Year. Other contenders for the award include Bethesda Softworks' Fallout 3, Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto IV, Valve's Left 4 Dead, and Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4. Other multiple-award nominees include Epic's Gears of War 2 (9), Valve's Left 4 Dead (8), Bethesda's Fallout 3 (8), Konami's MGS4 (7), and Lionhead's Fable II (6).

The awards will be doled out as part of the AIAS' annual DICE Summit on February 19 at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. As he did for last year's IAAs, comedian Jay Mohr will emcee the event, his fourth time to do so.

nah mgs4 won't win all the awards. GTAIV will most likely to win game of the year award.

Seems to me like MGS4 will be getting all the awards. Don't see how it could go any other way.

i dont really no how u would judge a good game to people, this list just shows the games that people have actually owned and played, for christ sake Valkyria Chronicles isnt even mentioned, not as an RPG or even artistic achievement, i think if a game that has an emotional of war but doesnt need to draw blood and guts to do it deserves some kind of recognition

As if they couldn't find a fifth RPG eh?

    Valkyria Chronicles
    The World Ends With You
    Crisis Core
    Persona 4

    C'mon

-Outstanding Achievement in Original Story- and in the list is GTAIV but isn't MGS4? What the hell???

LBP is an amasing game, too bad that the sales aren't as impressive as it should be.

you guys are getting bent outta shape awful quick. the lists above are just for the nominees, nobody won anything yet. with that being said i think lbp will win maybe 2 awards, braid SHOULD win at least 1, and i would be upset if mgs 4 :gotp doesn't win a few.

I'll be honest, the thing that most irks me about this list is that Braid is seen as a "casual" game. It's a challenging game that actually requires a big investment of time to finish every puzzle. I doubt many "casual" gamers could play over about half without getting frustrated.

pokemon mystery dungeon as RPG of the year, but not the world ends with you. Good to know the media groups in charge actually don;t play games and just go on hype.

All of the "overall" games of the year are boring after the first couple of hours, they are not epic games, there have been far better.

Oh and while LBP is a great idea in theory, its actually not that good (and yes i have it, not compleated it, only had fun with the paintinator which imo should have been in from the start), cause theres somethign off with the jumping, kinda important for a platformer!)

This whole list is bs but its the way of the games market now, its heading for a nice crash cause "high selling games" not "good" games are leading the way :/

    @Everyone
after reading about LBP being nominated in so many outstanding categories if you do not already own LBP then maybe you should. if your a 360 owner only, then maybe LBP and MGS4 should sway you to pick up a PS3. it's worth it on so many levels. it's mgs4 for the win in just about any category that it's been nominated for, but i am very pleased to see LBP doing so well. i've never played a platformer quite like it. also, in outstanding achievement in visual engineering, i think tomb raider deserved it's nomination. hate the camera's, and the combat needs a lot of work, but visually it was pretty great.

I have to agree on the LBP and MGS4 showdown. Both have done what no game has done before on consoles to that particular level. Everything else is pretty much a rehash of reused design with updated graphics. There are tons of FPS, GoW2 isnt any different in this regard. Its a solid and good game, but its not really an achievement. Sorry, but its true. Spore's creature creation was interesting, though the rest of the game lacked depth as it was just a collection of mediocre minigames. WoW is only an achievement in that its so popular and solid, even after so many years. GTA4 was an achievement in how it was able have such a large detailed sandbox... so I suppose its up there with LBP and MGS4, though the mechanics are not all that different from previous titles. It does use on the spot character movement and physics rendering, which is new and great...but its another company that did that. Dead Space was a joke, it looked good but thats about it. Its sound track is worth a nod though. Left for Dead had a unique and solid online play set up. Its a great game, Valve did another good job. Not really a huge achievement in my book, but its definately nice to see player mod ideas being used, and turned into an AAA title. Finally Fallout 3...not impressed really. Its not an achievement in that its just an upgrade of Oblivion. The art direction is worth giving a nod too however, though its just taken from the older fallout titles. I know I mentioned games that were not part of the overall game of the year, but I felt they were worth addressing anyways. LBP brought user generated content and inter connectivity to the console platform. Thats a huge achievement. Its iconic enough to become the next Mario, or Sonic in terms of branding. Sony has a good mascot this time around. MGS4 is just a cinematic interactive masterpiece on a level like no game has been done before. In my opinion, much of it based on the actual development and delivery of the titles for the next gen market, they are really the best.

Fable II as Outstanding Achievement in Original Story? It was a shorten version Fable 1's story. The list is crap.
