TGS '07: Bladestorm Hands-On

We cross swords with Koei's epic wargame in Tokyo.

TOKYO--After wading through the thick tides of people at the Tokyo Game Show without a sword, wading through the throngs of opponents with a fully-armed crew in Bladestorm was pure pleasure. We cut straight to a kiosk and began a brand-new demo in which we created our mercenary. We could choose either male or female, with a solid set of customization options. We decided on a saucy-looking female warrior, and then found ourselves in a tavern, gabbing with a one-eyed bartender.

From there, we got to choose an assignment for either the French or the British. In case you aren't familiar with Bladestorm, it's a hack-and-slash action game that takes place during the Hundred Years War. Rather than play one of the heroes, such as Joan of Arc, you play a mercenary, freely taking missions for either side. We jumped on with the French and went to battle against the British.

When our mission began, our sassy warrior woman was standing with a crew of about 10 infantrymen. We quickly took the lead, and guided them into battle against a huge knot of British troops. Once engaged, we could have relied on our character's special commands to turn the tide in our favor, but we decided instead to see how the battle would go if we played it completely straight and let our boys fight on their own.

Given that they outnumbered us three-to-one, they chopped us to pieces, and soon there was a squad of about 30 troops chasing our one woman across the countryside. Fortunately, she was fleet of foot and soon met up with some French allies, at which point we turned the tables on our pursuers. The allies we ran into were cavalry, and with them we were able to ride down the British resistance like dogs, charging through their ranks, plowing over their men, and generally stabbing them repeatedly.

Once we had their divisions in a confused mess, we swept off for more opponents to fell. No matter where we went, the graphics were gorgeous. The environments were lush and realistic, the character models animated well, and when you consider how many of them were on the screen at once, that's awfully impressive. Small battles tend to include at least 100 units. And that's what makes the game so fun.

Rambling about the countryside, you'll see a knot of dangerous-looking foes, only to rumble within their midst and execute a couple of power moves. When you do this, the enemy goes flying like candy out of a bashed piņata, and you and your troops feel like real battlefield studs. This feeling only increases with level, as you gain control of more and more powerful units.

Although we've seen some of those levels, Koei representatives assure us there are many more unseen. And considering the hell we've raised with just the low-level soldiers, we can't wait to partake in the carnage inflicted with units of deadlier skill. When we do, we'll make sure to jot down all the gory details for your reading pleasure. Otherwise, you'll be able to see for yourself war's awesome toll when Bladestorm ships later this year.

Shodden: Well, you get to NAME your avatar...

But no, no historical people. I don't think there were many (or any) famous mercenaries who kept switching sides so they could level their Horse skills. But ya do get a Fame level that increases when you do cool stuff.

do you have to be a nameless avatar or can you be a historical hero like in Dynasty warriors?

played the demo and its a total win. I like that you can just rip through enemy forces, but your using different squads againts different squads to get the job done right, and not just going in there alone and killing everything in your way. very cool i think, didnt seem 1 unit was a super unit. calvalry had a problem with the bowmen, I had to usually stay with where my allies where going, as if i did go to one base alone with a group of swords im pretty much toast. saw some catapults and other artilary around that was punching at walls of a big city while units where around it waiting for the new entrance. very cool, hope you can camand one in the final game. cant wait till it comes out, just hope i have enough money to get it.... have to get assassins creed, mass effect, and COD 4 first >_>

I don't care what score this game gets (so far 8 from eurogamer - crap reviewers anyhow - and 7.5 on the xbox version) this game is for me.
I've always wanted to wage war on a middle-ages battlefield and control different types of troops.
Given that you can "run around the countryside", if you have as much variety and the map is huge, meaning you will hardly see things twice, I will be playing this every day from Nov 6.

San Andreas, but in middle ages, with war. That's my kinda ****!

the demo was pure win, IÂīve played it like 7 times now, using different unit types and so on. I even died once of twice.
if you think cavalry are overpowered (the should be) then use pikes/spears or twohand swords (their special moun masher can kill entire squads of horsemen in one swoop).
I was pleasantly surprised with the demo, I thought it was going to be more like Kuf or something

is the 1-2 players thing here on gamespot true? if so , Hooray! ;D

Just played the demo... this game wins. This is the game I've been waiting for, it seems like a whole decade... a game where you yell "CHARGE" and your team of dudes rides out and kicks some asses for you. Sheer awesome.

Personally, after playing the demo, i would love to seem them execute this gameoplay into a multiplayer mode. Also, I was suprised how different it was from DW and was glad about it. I plan on getting thisd game the day it comes out.

Just played the demo...dammit, ANOTHER game I hafta buy. I hope you can keep freelancing and tipping the balance and stuff through the whole game, 'cause then it could go on forever. And that'd be cool.

There should be a bigger difference between the sides, though...like, the French should have better cavalry, and the Brits should have better archers. Maybe those'll pop up later in.

Whatever, it's good stuff. Yay Nov. 6!

    ~ShaunFroggatt~
First of all...its the war where giving someone the "finger" was born. With the longbow..when you pulled back the string with the middle finger..it was called "plucking the u"...so when they were caught...their middle fingers where cut off...not both middle and index. So as you said the ones that still had theirs would raise there middle finger and scream to the french "Pluck U"...as if to say "I can still pluck my u"...that in time changed to f**k you and the rest is history.

Played the demo. I wasn't very impressed, the game is good at first but after one contract it all seems bland and repetitive. The action isn't very exciting because you can't actually control your character well in a fight. Overall i thought the Demo was a good distraction from my other games but it doesn't stay good for long. This is coming from a guy that plays Dynasty warriors so i know when a game is too repetitive.
