Back in June 2008, BioShock publisher Take-Two Interactive announced that the dystopian shooter was to undergo a big-screen adaptation, with Pirates of the Carribean director Gore Verbinski at the helm. Since then, the project has suffered several setbacks, with Universal Pictures placing the film on hold due to a ballooning £160 million budget. Even director Gore Verbinski had second thoughts, though he turned down a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie to direct BioShock.

Now, Variety reports that Verbinski has stepped down from the director's chair altogether, with Universal in talks with 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to replace him. The film trade notes that Fresnadillo's appointment hinges upon Take-Two's approval, which has final say over director approval.

According to Variety, Verbinski is said to have turned down the project after Universal made plans to move much of the filming abroad, conflicting with the director's schedule. The report notes that Verbinski will remain the film's producer through his production company, Blind Wink.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is best known for helming postapocalyptic horror film 28 Weeks Later, though this is the only major movie the director has on his CV.

watch it get destroyed just like every other video game adaptation movie ever made where they try to make their own twist like those resident evil movies.

MAKE A FILM ABOUT THE STORY IN THE GAME AND FOLLOW IT AND YOU WILL HAVE SUCCESS! IT WAS A GREAT GAME WITH A GREAT STORY. Not everyone is a gamer and to many it would make for a great movie. But tell that to mr. hollywood and he will probably sh!$ in your corn flakes

Wow i really wish Verbinski was still directing. I'm sorry to say but i have more faith in him than Fresnadillo. Pirates seemed to be a better movie than 28 weeks later.

I liked 28 Weeks Later, and Pirates. Fresnadillo should do fine. I only wish a director with major talent, and a proven record would take on some of the other great video game IP's out there.

At some point, Hollywood will realize the game IP's are becoming...have become the far superior form of media entertainment. There is just to much potential wasted in both directions right now. Everyone seems to be afraid of the stigma attached to the game to movie, and movie to game projects already done.

@buttons2010. Yeah Terry Gilliam would've been good a good choice if he was still making good movies like Brazil and Twelve Monkeys, but I don't see that happening anymore. I could get a pleasant surprise though when The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus comes out.

IMO, on the relative strengths of 28 Weeks Later & the Pirates movies, Fresnadillo is a far superior, and more suitable, director to Verbinski.

I really hope this makes it to the big screen. Game movies aren't usually that great, but this one has potential.

It's a shame it is not Danny Boyle now that would be a great Bioshock movie.

For a little while I really thought we were going to get a good video game to movie adaptation. Now we most likely won't be getting it. The director's style just doesn't fit now.

Movies of games CAN be good IMO. I really like Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil 1, REegeneration and FF7:Advent Children. 28 weeks later was rubbish compared to the first film and I blame the director so I won't hold my breath for this film.
