Levine: Current game 'more ambitious' than BioShock

With BioShock 2 making headlines this week for being pushed back into 2010, the creative director behind the predecessor is talking about what he's doing instead of working on the underwater shooter's first sequel. In an interview with Gamasutra published today, Levine teased his current project in response to a question about the pace of expansion at his 2K Boston studio.

"When we thought about the shipping date of the project," Levine said, "we needed a certain kind of length for the title, because we had a scope and ambition in mind which is more ambitious than anything we've ever done. Even more, substantially more ambitious than BioShock. And we knew that was not going to happen overnight."

Levine has been rumored to be working on a reboot of the tactical turn-based strategy series X-Com. Speaking to GameSpot in March, the developer wouldn't confirm or explicitly deny the speculation.

"I will say that I'm probably the world's biggest X-Com [fan]," Levine told GameSpot, adding, "I won't say I'm working on an X-Com game."

Regardless of what his next project is, Levine isn't leaving BioShock behind entirely. He also told Gamasutra that he is writing a prologue and epilogue for a BioShock novel being penned by author John Shirley (City Come A-Walkin', Wetbones).

It's going to be X-com, when they can't deny something, it's usually that. But it's kind of hard to be more ambitious than a original IP like Bioshock, if you are making a reebot or sequel to something.

Its all good. I was getting worried I would have to split my time between Bioshock 2 and CODMW2 with them being released the same month. Now I can play MW2 and then later play Bioshock 2. Bioshock was one of my favorite games of all time. Playing MW online, some guy was talking crap about Bioshock saying it was overrated. What a moron. Not all FPS are the same.

I'm not too distraught about BioShock 2 delay. There are too many AAA titles this year (imo). BioShock 2 WAS probably the cream of the crop, however, this will give other games a chance to shine.

I did the math, for myself personally, I am slated to spend about $600.00 on games from now til the end of the year. Thats really above normal for me. Plus, BS2 will have more polish.

Right now any delay for a game I'm interested in is unusually welcomed news for me.

I can't believe I said that, but I'll stand by it... this time.

As for this mystery game... it better not be like Molyneux's Milo

Whatever the game is, it deserves my attention. Bioshock was an amazing game, as were other games Levine worked on.

Well, I'm excited about this new game. I mean, after Bioshock, I have expectations, and I believe it could be something even more imaginative. Only time will tell but I see no reason to be worried from now. New games are always good news in today's market of endless sequels.

Well what i was trying to say is Battlefield is an incredibly half-assed game series, has been since BF Vietnam.Bioshock is genius. And, you reporting me just shows that, you're a wuss, therefore, you have an invalid opinion, so...

bioshock wasnt all that ambitious,it was just a toned down system shock/deus ex for the simple minded console crowd

    @BloodMist

    ?

I fail to see what the two have in common other than they are first person shooters. But they both offer wildly different gameplay. Which doesn't mean that someone can't enjoy both I don't understand why someone couldn't enjoy Bioshock and yet still enjoy Battlefield, but once again I am baffled by your comments.

In answer to your question I played about 4 hours of Battlefield 2 at a friend's house years and years ago, that's about all of the experience I have with the series. And in regards to you getting reported perhaps you shouldn't have called me a nasty name and taken less offense to another person's opinion, it is after all just a game.
