NHL 2K7 nets gold

Xbox, Xbox 360 versions of 2K Sports' NHL 2K7 skate off to factory; PlayStation 2 version stuck in penalty box until later in the month.

While most of America is fixated on the upcoming football season, which literally kicks off tonight, fans of another gritty sport are sharpening their blades in anticipation of the beginning of their sport's season. Professional hockey drops the puck in mid-September, but games based on the NHL are ready to skate now.

2K Sports' NHL 2K7 titles for the Xbox and Xbox 360 have completed development and are off for replication, says the publisher. The game will be on the market on September 12 and will retail for $59.99 on the Xbox 360 and $19.99 on the Xbox.

Though the versions for Microsoft's console are ready to skate, it appears as though the PlayStation 2 edition isn't quite ready to leave the locker room. 2K Sports says that the game will available "in late September." A PlayStation 3 version is also in the works and should be ready this holiday season.

NHL 2K7 is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older. For more information on the game, read GameSpot's previous coverage.

Theres a slight delay for the PS2 version of 2K7? Meh, so we have to wait a few more days, no big deal. NHL 2K6 is the best hockey game on store shelves right now, in my opinion. I'm curious to see what the PS3 version of 2K7 has to offer. By the way hockey season starts early next month in October not mid-September. GO RED WINGS!!!

Lol at you guys. I have seen NHL 06 crash right in the middle of replays on a clean disc. You guys are the ones out to lunch.

I live where the game is actually made you fools. I would love to say EA's is better but it has copied 2K year after year, like Right ANalog stick controls, and Deflections, and so on and so forth.

As for the faceoffs, i have no idea what your talking about, your just makin stuff up now because obviously you have never been to an NHL game or even played hockey in your entire life, because EA's game has been so arcade for years now. Go ahead pledge allegiance to a bunch of billionaire's and i'll remain unbiased and go with the best game this year.

Also if you didn't read my whole post then your obviously not gonna understand what i'm saying. Go take some ritilyn and start paying attention. NHL 2002 was arcade, 2003 was a joke, 2004, was crap, 2005 was crap, 2006 is the junkiest piece of junk sorry excuse for a hockey game i have ever played. EA has gone completly downhill in an effort to make a game as real as 2K's.

Have you not noticed how they change their gameplay every year since 2002? Are you that clueless? You must be, that or your blinded by a brand name. This is my impression of you "A durr....does this game have the letters EA on it? Oh it doesn't well forget it i'm not touching it, i'll only play anything with EA on the box. I don't even care how it plays, as long as it says "Ea sports its in the game" before it starts. A durrr.....i'm the waterboy"

Go play the demo for NHL 07 on Xbox Live and then see which one you are going to buy. EA's version is looking like its going to destroy the 2K series, especially if this years game for the 360 is as crappy as the last one. Hopefully the cardboard skating motions and cardboard looking players have changed, but I highly doubt it!

Hey Surette, the puck doesn't drop mid-September for the hockey season, it drops early October.

vanhalendlrband - wow, that was a really stupid post. I lost all interest in reading when you said EA has copied everything from 2K and adds nothing new. If you logically look at what is being done this year and compare the two games then it is so bloody obvious that EA is making the better game.

You can go ahead and play your hockey games that have face-offs in no mans land, with a ref 6 feet away from the players and perhaps the lamest announcers in hockey history.

I love my ($20) NHL-2k5 and NFL-2k5 hate EA with a passion. No glitches no freeze ups no problems.

I rarely have glitches in 2k, and EA glitches just as much and always has since day 1.

vanhalendlrband, you're full of it. I have supported 2K for the past 3 years, and picked up NHL 06 out of curiosity....2K6 was a glitch-fest, where as NHL 06 ran perfectly fine.

Who would pay 60 for the 360 version when they can get the xbox version for 20? I know the game is fun but a $40 difference?

I rarely have glitches in 2k, and EA glitches just as much and always has since day 1. So don't gimme that crap either you guys.

I wouldn't give up on this game considering EA's hand me down from Madden the previous year crap they pulled since NHL hockey (the first one) on genesis. EA never gave a crap about hockey because they knew everyone would buy it no matter what, and then 2K came along.

The fact is the gameplay has been completly true to Hockey (which most of you posting know nothing about) i who live where EA's game is made (Vancouver, BC) would love to buy it for my local economy but the fact is i got sick of EA's crap, and remain unbiased and will see who wins this year.

2K5 was horrid for glitches but not gameplay, 2005 was just horrid. 2K6 worked fine for me and i rarely had problems and 2006 i have seen a tonne of glitches in as well.

It remains to be seen which is better this year, but don't count 2K out for at least trying to make something new in Hockey gaming which EA is only now just doing by copying everything done in 2K.

I also no longer pledge allegiance to any multi million or billion dollar company. Even though logically i should be an EA fanboy as NHL 07 is made here in Vancouver and use motion capturing with Vancouver Canucks players and even had Markus Naslund on the 2005 cover but the game was so bad in my eyes i still couldn't buy it over 2K. EA fanboys, HA! I was EA fanboy for over 15 years so don't even try and tell me what is or what isn't about any hockey game.

Don't buy the 2K series of hockey games! They're glitchy as ^&% and will freeze at the most inconvenient times. Since wasting my money on these games in recent years, it has become my mission to let potential 2K sports victims know that they are in for a big disappointment if they buy a 2K sports game and plan to play in any sort of Franchise or online mode, as they will inevitably experience serious crashes, freezes, and glitchy bugs! Don't buy it!!!!

this is actually one sport where I'd prefer a release date after the season starts so we could get the rookies (ex. Malkin) in the game.

"to the previous poster - what exactly has 2K done with this year's version? Cinemotion? I'll take a new way to pass, check, deke and shoot over crappy musical immersion and a new camera angle. Sounds arcadey to me - not sim-like at all."

EA has never done sim properly. I will give them props for the incredibly deep franchise modes, but that's it! They can never quite put their finger on the pulse of the sim aspect of sports. That has always been their biggest criticism... EVERY YEAR! If you are looking to EA for sim... look again. 2K Baby!

If EA does anything well, its making players appear to skate! Even in other sports... have you ever played their other franchises. The players are always skating all over the place with basketball being the worst offender. Now if they can harness all this bad game design for good in this hockey game, it just may be a winner! NO BODY SKATES LIKE EA!!!

As for 2K, they always make strides in game design with their sports franchises. On a separate note... lets all bow our heads in a moment of silence for the greatest football game ever made to this day... NFL2K5!!! Amen! 2K7 Hockey will be a hit because unlike EA who builds a game engine and then wears it into the ground, 2K improves with every iteration. Who was the first to incorporate real physics into team sports... 2K, the first to incorporate physical momentum.... 2K, the first to incorporate player expression... 2K and the first to use the dual stick control properly... lets all say it together 2K!!!! All hail 2K Sports!
