UK game charts: July 16-22

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories makes it five weeks at the top, followed by THQ's Cars, which jumps 14 places to number two.

Take-Two Interactive's Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is still the game to beat on the UK all-format chart this week, as it enjoys its fifth week in a row at the top. Most of the same titles remained in the top 10 this week, making the chart look incredibly similar to last week's. The most notable change was THQ's Cars, which jumped a massive 14 places from last week's 16 to this week's number two.

As predicted last week, the jump in the chart for Cars, based on Pixar's film of the same name, coincides with promotional activity around the movie's July 28 release. The game's success may also be due to the start of the school holidays in the UK, with the handheld formats (PlayStation Portable/Nintendo DS/Game Boy Advance) being the major contributor to Cars' sales, according to the chart's compiler Chart Track.

The top 10 saw no other new entries this week, with Sierra's Miami Vice: The Game and Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga both failing to even reach the top 40. The highest new entry was actually a reentry on the chart, as Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion made an appearance at number 33.

Nintendo had two nonmovers in the top 10, with New Super Mario Bros. at number three and Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training at number six. Pro Evolution Soccer 5 and 2006 FIFA World Cup both continued their decline, while the two Pirates of the Caribbean games plundered the middle of the chart at numbers four and five. Elsewhere, both Prey and Over the Hedge dropped five places this week, sitting at numbers seven and 10, respectively.

July 28 sees a number of high-profile releases that could make an impact on next week's chart. Civilization IV: Warlords is hitting the PC, and PSP games Field Commander and Juiced Eliminator arrive in the UK.

Why all the outcry at the UK being filled with casual gamers?
Casual gamers are better than no gamers after all.

Oh, and the person that said the Brits love the PS2 and the guy that said British people will buy anything. You are both correct, this is a nation of sheep and the PS3 will dominate here in the UK cause once again, it will be the "cool" machine to own. The sheep in this country wont understand the Wii and well, look how well the 360 is doing. No offense to the Brits on this board, you guys are cool, I'm talking about the general public that piss me off in GAME buying FIFA street or some toss.

Like Havoc said, only one 360 game in the charts is sad. The 360 is losing to this generation before the next generation has even started. Just like the Dreamcast, competed with PS1 and n64 and flopped before PS2 and Gamecube came out. Releasing the 360 this early was a bad move I think. Sure you get to sell a few before the real war begins but then the games on the current gen are better so what's the point? Maybe by christmas the 360 will have a must own game or 2, at the moment it's pointless if you own a half decent pc.

Cars, Over the Hedge, Pirates of the Carribean are poor games that sell for their name sake movies.

New Super Mario and Prey probably deserve their ranks.

Two football games in there is no suprise.

Brainage, suprising didn't think people would think to buy it without knowing much about it, i suppose it appeals to a wider audience then 12-20 year old guys.

wow, only 1 360 game on the list? thats sad, with the wii and PS3 coming in 4 months 360 is gonna stuggle if it doesnt improve on its release schedule............this same problem killed the dreamcast and gamecube's last few years

since the original xbox only lasted 3 and a half years i expect 360 to last about the same........what a shame
