US console sales charts: July 9-15

Soccer games trip, Prey teleports to third, Chromehounds shoots to fourth, and the familiar duo of Mario and Brain Age returns to the top.

Just when gamers thought New Super Mario Bros. and Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Just Minutes a Day were cooling off, the DS duo got as hot as the summer days hitting much of the country. A week after slipping to fourth (Brain Age) and fifth (Mario), the pair took over the top two slots of BestBuy.com's weekly best-seller list, with Mario jumping back into first the week of July 9-15.

Two new Xbox 360 releases followed the portable pair on the ladder. Prey, the gravity-defying shooter from Human Head Studios, debuted in third place in its first week in stores. In fourth was Chromehounds, From Software's mech combat game, also seeing the light of retail for the first time this week.

Six soccer games from Electronic Arts occupied the top 10 last week, but with the World Cup decided and done, the tally this time was half the previous week's. The PlayStation 2 versions of 2006 FIFA World Cup and FIFA Soccer 2006 took fifth and seventh, respectively, while the top 10 was rounded out by the Xbox version of 2006 FIFA World Cup.

The rest of the top 10 was a mixed bag, with Big Brain Academy taking DS gamers to school at sixth, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja for the PS2 in eighth, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter for the Xbox 360 in the nine slot. The Xbox 360 had a strong showing, with a quartet of 360 games just missing the cut: 2006 FIFA World Cup (11th), FIFA Soccer 2006 (12th), Prey Collector's Edition (13th), and Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth II (15th).

This week sees the newest release of a summertime juggernaut, NCAA Football 07, from EA. Check back next week to see if cover athlete Reggie Bush can high-step over Mario and take the top slot.

Sorry SolidFear, but the PSP is a gonner. Better sell yours and get a DS as quick as you can.

SolidFear and rl_41, your both somewhat delusional.
SolidFear you say that there are no good DS games in your opinion, fine, but don't try to validate it by saying you played your friends DS, how many DS games have you played? Have you played all of them? If not then you can't say that you think all DS games are bad since you haven't played them.

rl_41, so just because you think a game is kiddy then it is automatically kiddy to everyone else. AW: DS might look kiddy but it is fun and has a lot of strategy. Some games put on a kiddy look to get both demographics, the kids for the look and the older people for the actual gameplay. Take an example from books, George Orwell's Animal Farm can be seen as a children's book, depending on how its read. But for people with a brain or two they can see the satire and comedy behind the somewhat kiddy demeanour. Grow up and stop being a Sony fanboy.

I have both handheld systems and i work in a videogame store in in portugal, i can tell you guys, the battle between them its pretty tied, but in my opinion this is not about the top 10, this is about the games,in my opinion psp resumes to Loco Roco and Exit, DS has NSMB, Mario Kart, advance wars, Trauma Center, brain t, metroid and will have the most tremendous and great franchise ever ZELDA!!

Hey SolidFear... your comment made me laugh. You start by saying Nintendo has no new innovative IPs (Nintendogs & Brain Age/Big Brain come to mind, both started a phenomenon on release). DS has awesome, innovative third party games as well... Trauma Center and Phoenix Wright come to mind. After that, you say that you are looking forward to PSP releases of Tekken, Killzone and MGS... how are they innovative exactly? What's innovative about PSP is what it can do (I use mine for videos, and music), but face it, the games aren't groundbreaking at all.

I have both a PSP and a DS, so it's easy for me to compare them... DS pwns.

PSP: Media player, but otherwise, not many games to look forward to, except Sonic Rivals and Metal Slug.
DS: May not play media, but MANY games to look forward too, and many classics to own. Also original with two screens, touch screen, and microphone. Nintendo is bein' more original.

Wow, look at the amazing innovation and original ideas of Nintendo! "Lets bring back Super Mario Bros...AGAIN!"..."Wow, what a wonderful idea!"

Seriously, I'm sick of this crap, until I see some good new original IP's from Nintendo, I am staying as far away as I can from them. I'm sick of it.

And the PSP is a great game player if you actually try it. So don't hate on it, and claim crap before you play the game. DS has no good games in my opinion, hence I am refraining from buying one. I have tried the DS, cause my friend owns one, and thats all.

And shut up to all the people who try to convince people to get a different console, your being nothing but sick dictators. I'm sick of it, as are many people. Tons of killer PSP games will dominate the Top 10 later this year, starting with games like Tekken, then Killzone, GTA, and MGS...

Haha, Naruto....one of the best fighting games ever. I'm sorry...but that statement must've been spoken by a fanboy. That game is so mediocre in so many ways that it can be nothing but a licensed anime game appealing to the Cartoon Network masses. Sigh...such is way of our economic world, make what sells, not what is the highest quality.

Naruto is one of the best fighting game I've ever played, might be why it's so popular?

Shadow of Colossus isn't worht playing more then 4 days, it grows old quickly and that's probably why it never made the top selling charts, just another over hyped game for it's good graphics

My two cents, on the "changing issue"...: am I not allowed to like the way I play games since the earlier generation? but prettier (much prettier I might add...), am I forced to enter this "changing" thing ?, yeah... I can give it a try, but I DO like the way I play games with a standard console, with a standard rumble pad.
I also think that DS is a girl's system, but that's a cliche that got into my mind. Every girl I know owns one...

Wow, if ignorance is bliss you must be one happy camper Yoshinatsu666. I take it you didn't like Brain Age because the math problems were alittle to tough for you? Try opening up your mind and try something new. Of course you seem more than happy to play the millionth Mega Man and more PS2 ports, so I shouldn't be surprised. As far as calling people retards goes; just because something doesn't fit your narrow view of cool, doesn't make those who enjoy it retarded.

What's wrong with Big Brain? Sure Psychonauts ,Ico, Metal Arms and Beyond Good and Evil are cool games but that doesn't mean Big Brain is bad.

It's sad to see stuff like Big Brain Academy and sports games in the top ten while great games like Psychonauts and Shadow of the Colossus get ignored, there are so few real gamers out there
