X-Men Legends Handbook

We begin our look at the people and places in Activision's upcoming RPG starring the X-Men.

X-Men Legends is the upcoming action RPG from Activision. The game is being developed by veteran studio Raven Software, which has made quite a name for itself over the years thanks to some nicely crafted first-person shooters on the PC and some promising conversions of their work to the Xbox. X-Men Legends marks a number of firsts for the respected developer because the game is its first proper foray into the RPG genre, and it's also the developer's first multiplatform release. Furthermore, the game also represents the first time that Marvel's Ultimate X-Men have appeared in a video game.

For those unfamiliar with Marvel's mutant phenomenon, the X-Men are a group of men and women who are the next step in human evolution. They possess varied superpowers and use them to protect humanity, despite the fact that they're feared and even hated by most nonmutant humans. The rich premise has helped the books that feature the team to become a comics juggernaut. As a result, the books have spanned decades and have spawned a variety of offshoot media--from comics, cartoons, and games, to motion pictures. Over the years, Marvel Comics has told different tales, which have all put new spins on the team. The latest such endeavor is the four-year-old "Ultimate X-Men" books that offer a new contemporary take on the popular X-Men mythos. Of course, these books quickly became hits.

Given the books' popularities, the Ultimate X-Men cast and world is being used as the core for X-Men Legends. The game's story will focus on the team's attempt to stop Magneto from imprisoning the human race and will feature a roster of 15 characters from the books--including Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, and Jean Grey--that you'll use to create a four-man team. You'll have to pick your team wisely, as each character's abilities will factor directly into how you'll progress through individual levels. Some characters will even be able to perform multiple-character moves, such as Wolverine and Colossus' fastball special. The game's RPG mechanics let you use experience points, which the characters earn over the course of the game, to upgrade the entire team or just individual characters. Moreover, you have the option to unlock additional mutant abilities by using your experience points. The familiar roster of heroes is matched by a comparable sampling of villains, which includes Magneto, The Brotherhood of Mutants, and the deadly mutant-hunting robots, the Sentinels.

Over the next several months, we'll be presenting encyclopedic entries on X-Men Legends' cast and locations that will bring you up to speed on who's who in the game, in addition to what powers each team member possesses. The entries will be supplemented by exclusive assets that will help you see the people and places in the game as well.
