UK game chart: January 28-February 3

Capcom's Lost Planet is frozen at the top of the charts for a second week in a row, while football titles from Konami and EA round off the top three.

After its debut at the top of the UK all-formats chart three weeks ago, Lost Planet has proven it has the legs to stay in the top two ever since. Chart-Track reports that Capcom's Xbox 360-exclusive shooter has held onto the top spot for the week of January 28 to February 3, fighting off competition from Pro Evolution Soccer 6 at two and FIFA 07 at three.

While the top three games remained relatively unchanged, Sega's Mega Drive Collection (Sega Genesis Collection in the US) made the week's highest new entry at number four. Released for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable at a budget price point, the compilation covers classic Sega franchises that include Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star, and Shinobi.

Further down the chart, Wii titles continued to do well--WarioWare: Smooth Moves jumped up one place to six and Wii Play fell slightly to number seven. Four chart stalwarts made up the rest of the top 10, with Need for Speed Carbon at six, New Super Mario Bros. at eight, Cars at nine, and The Sims 2: Pets at 10.

While the lack of new entries in the top 10 has let the usual raft of titles dominate once again, there are a few standout titles making their first appearance farther down the chart. Little Britain the Video Game made its debut at number 14, and handheld titles Star Fox Command and Rocky Balboa entered at numbers 26 and 27. Sony Online Entertainment's Vanguard: Saga of Heroes also entered the chart for the first time at number 34, with the EverQuest publisher undoubtedly hoping to match the popularity of current massively multiplayer king World of Warcraft.

Possible new entries on next week's chart include Battlestations: Midway, which is being released on the Xbox 360 and PC by Eidos, Okami on the PS2, and Maelstrom on the PC. Keep an eye on next week's chart to see if any of them have what it takes to dislodge Lost Planet, or if Capcom can make it three weeks in a row at the top.

Interesting, most interesting, although I would love to see the actual volume of sales compared to games this time last year. Once FFXII, Okami and GOW 2 has been released for the PS2 in the UK normal service will resume.
