The Lost to debut on PCs

FX Labs says project is "on track" to premiere on the PC, then arrive on Xbox; publisher and ship date remain undetermined.

In the annals of game development, few titles have taken such a twisted road to release as The Lost. First announced in 2001, the game has gone through a series of developers, publishers, and platforms.

Originally developed by Irrational Games for the PlayStation 2, the game was shopped to various publishers--including Acclaim--before it was scooped up by Crave Entertainment. Soon after, the publisher announced the game would be coming to the Xbox as well as the PS2 in Q4 2002.

However, The Lost missed its holiday launch. Then, in February 2003, Crave Entertainment announced that it was shifting its focus to value-priced games. Only a few months later, The Lost was canceled for the PS2, and the title sat in development limbo.

Since then, little has been heard about The Lost, leading many to believe the game had been canceled. But not only is that that not the case, the title is now coming to the PC, according to Tony Garcia, CEO of FX Labs, an independent developer with offices in Seattle and Hyderabad, India.

"About 18 months ago FX Labs took over the game," Garcia told GameSpot. "We're now using the Unreal 2.5 engine to build a PC version, which will be released first. Then the game will come to the Xbox."

Garcia insisted that The Lost is still being "codeveloped" by Irrational, which was recently bought by Take-Two Interactive. And though the game still does not have a publisher, FX executive seemed confident Irrational's new owner would be receptive to being The Lost's publisher. "We'll be speaking with them first," said Garcia. "They're a logical first choice for the game." He declined "to commit" to a release window.

my xbox that i had bought years ago has a screenshot of the lost on it as having been available...irony...anyway, I would rather see something like The Red Star get a release, or see the 4 horsemen game...besides, wasn't the lost originally pegged for a dreamcast release? Right after Illbleed? and speaking of Illbleed, what happened to the xbox port of that and Rent a Hero no.2? And speaking of AIA, where's my Akira Psychoball, or Dokopon 2? Eh, sorry 'bout that. It seems to me that there are more games with more potential, but that doesn't mean anything. Look at Too Human...it started life as a PS1 title. I don't know...the screenie and the little description on my xbox packaging makes it look and sound more like a ghosthunter-type game, very much unlike the shape-shifting adventure through hell to bargain with satan for the soul of your tortured daughter who was wrongfully kiled and mistakenly sent to hell so you can see the grotesqueries of the abyss while becoming a knight, mage, et al....sounds kinds like a twisted Kameo...sorry for the rant, but yeah, to get back to it, I'm sure we'll see this launch right along side Starcraft: Ghost and the Dreamcast Half-Life....

This is going to be a very odd game, with no ending what so ever.

It would be nice if the article would give a clue on what the storyline is based on to keep my interest instead of second guessing gossip about it.
It's like starting a conversation with no subject to relate to, no background details.

I'm thrilled to discover that this game has resurfaced (had my sights set on it for years). I was almost worried that it was canned for good.

This game was actually just ranked as one of the top 10 vaporwares in the industry history by IGN in an article yesterday. Such sweet irony.

The lead character's name was Amanda, and she was suppossed to gain different abilities(stealth, intimidation, shape-shifting and the like) from different dark spirits that she defeats along the way. Ultimately, you'd HAVE to use all the acquired abilities to progress through the game. Part of the fun was to be figuring out which one to use at which given time, if memory serves. Kinda like Megaman. The game looked quite promising a few years back, but it's been through so many different hands...

This is eerie, as I mentioned this game to my boyfriend in conversation the night before I heard this news elsewhere. Clearly, I am the lathe of heaven...

Actually, it's supposed to be loosely based on Dante's Inferno, which made it peek my interest a bit. It actually sounds like an interesting idea if they can pull it off correctly. We'll have to see.

Oh, I remember this game. . . I remember being relieved it had been canned. I tlooks like a pretty bad game. . . especially since it has the same premise as that awful Robin Williams movie What Dreams May Come.
