[UPDATE] Gamasutra reports that the soon-to-be-shuttered Microsoft studio was working on a massively multiplayer spin-off of the shooter series; 50 prototype screenshots leaked, followed by concept art which all but confirms project.

Next Halo squad-based, Master Chief-free?

Sources say Bungie's next project won't feature the helmeted hero, and will instead focus on a squad of UNSC Marines in a "darker, grittier" campaign with possibly eight-player co-op.
