Halo movie in flux

Fox, Universal back out of Peter Jackson-produced adaptation of Bungie-developed game phenomenon.

In October 2005, the game industry was stunned when it was announced that Peter Jackson would executive-produce the film version of Halo. Many assumed that having the imprimatur of the writer-producer-director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy would assure that the Xbox shooter adaptation would buck the trend of game-based films being Uwe Boll-quality.

However, some financial concerns were raised in Hollywood when trade magazines reported that the price of the Halo script was $10 million and its budget would be at least $75 million. Adding to the witch's brew of doubts about the project were the hiring of novice director Neil Blomkamp and reports that Microsoft was demanding a hefty cut of the box-office proceeds. The film's original Alex Garland (28 Days Later)-penned script, which received rapturous buzz, was also reportedly rewritten by inexperienced screenwriter D.B. Weiss.

Despite the issues, the box-office allure of the Halo audience--which bought up nearly 15 million copies of Halo and Halo 2--was too much for Hollywood to resist. In June 2005, 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios announced they would cofinance Halo, which would be filmed in New Zealand. Effects would be provided by Jackson's Weta Workshop and Weta Digital effects houses, which provided the award-winning visuals for Rings and Universal's own King Kong.

Now, over a year later, it appears that Hollywood is having second thoughts about Halo. An assortment of news outlets, including Variety, report today that both Fox and Universal have decided to back out of the film, which was supposed to hit theaters next summer.

"While rumors had the studios concerned over a budget that was rising above the original projected $135 million price tag, the filmmakers said the double defection came after U[niversal] and Fox played hardball and unsuccessfully tried to get the filmmakers and Microsoft to reduce their profit participation," reported Variety. According to the trade, Halo's proposed budget had exceeded $200 million.

When contacted by GameSpot, a Microsoft rep confirmed that Universal had left the Halo project following a disagreement over financing and that the software giant was "disappointed." However, he could not confirm that Fox had dropped out, insisted the project would continue despite the setback, and underlined the fact that Jackson is still on board.

"The Halo franchise is hugely popular, and our goal remains the same--to find a partner that shares our passion and will creatively collaborate with us to best represent the story and spirit of the Halo franchise," the rep said. "Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and the rest of the creative team are dedicated to ensuring the Halo movie becomes a reality. We are already in discussions with potential partners who recognize the value of the Halo brand and its appeal to consumers worldwide."

If they make it I am definietly going to go see it, but there is the fact that they might screw it up and make Halo look crappy. So if they do make it and it turns out good sweet.

Studios will back out of projects when there are cost overruns and a first time director at the helm. What this film needs is a director who has experience with bringing these games to life on the silver screen, not some toddler whose resume consists of commercials. Especially with a huge budget of $135 million. This movie is doomed thanks to the wrong person behind the camera, no matter if they find a replacement partner for Universal Studios or not.

When was this movie deal announced again? Maybe it was just a publicity stunt to drive Halo2 sales.

A great Halo movie could be done with alot less money...passion doesn't have a price tag...or maybe it does.

Why the hell is the budget that high to begin with?

Why the hell doesn't Microsoft studios just finance the thing? It's not like they don't have the money to do it. Come on Bill Gates, pony up. Once you involve Greedywood, I mean Hollywood then everyone just cares about their cut of the profits. Believe me, if Peter Jackson can pitch a project as massive as Lord of the Rings then Halo should be child's play. I really only care about the Halo 3 video game myself.

I honestly don't care if Halo is made into a film or not.

Most game to film conversions fail badly, and I seriously doubt if it can be done. Gamers expectations and studios needs and understanding of games differ so greatly that it will never work.

    Well IMO
    Doom= ok...coulda been better
MK1- awesome movie for the time ^_^
MK2- sucked despite story having a point...
Silent Hill- really good...but...you can always complain
DOA- we know it will suck!

And so on...come on Halo...break away from the rest and become something good on its own, not "good cus it was like the game"

Just to let all of the halo movie hater's hear, Do you know most if not all the people who made halo the great game it is are also very involed in making the movie. I also though it would not be a good movie from reading the director but he has a ton of good influensed people who do know the game very well so i think its going to be a really good movie just for the fact that the people who made halo are closely involved in making the movie.

This had so much potential with Peter Jackson, 10x better then Doom. If you haven't seen Silent Hill, that was unbelievably well done.

It's better to cancel the movie than making a bad movie.
i hope they will overcome all the difficulties......

Not every good movie has to be released by Universal Studios or 20th Century Fox....hell, Lord of the Rings was released by New Line Cinema. Maybe Peter Jackson can do the same for Halo.

Im guessing this is going to be animated??
I doubt it will be quite the hit microsoft hope it will be, but it should be pretty good. However why the hell isnt he doing the hobbit first, a few other people have said this and I agree. The hobbit would suck without Ian Mckellen. Peter jackson should do the hobbit, and then halo. I like the idea of a halo film, I know a load of people say that it is no different than any other fps. I disagree, halo 1 at least has a very good storyline, and it could translate into a good film. AND CAN ALL YOU GAMERS SAYING GAME MOVIES SUCK PLEASE SHUT UP!!! IT IS BECCAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT THE MOVIE INDUSTRY HATES GAMERS!!!!
