Godzilla: Save the Earth Monster Profiles - Ebirah and Battra
Meet two more of the towering colossi that will battle it out in Atari's upcoming giant-monster game.
In Godzilla: Save the Earth, you'll discover that you sometimes have to destroy entire cities to save the planet. That's because in this upcoming action game, you'll take control of Godzilla and 17 other classic movie monsters and battle against each other in 12 of the world's major cities. We've profiled a number of the monsters who will appear in the game, including SpaceGodzilla, Mothra, Moguera, and Jet Jaguar--now we'll take a look at Ebirah and Battra. Godzilla: Save the Earth will ship for the PS2 and Xbox on November 2.
Ebirah
A mammoth crustacean living in the shallows off the South Seas island of Letchi, Ebirah was employed by an evil organization called the Red Bamboo to keep its slave laborers from escaping. No one knows what caused Ebirah to attain such a tremendous size, but rumors of heavy-water leakage from the Red Bamboo's reactor persist to this day.
Ebirah stands a modest 164 feet tall and weighs in at 25,300 tons, which is relatively small compared with the 394-foot-tall, 88,000-ton SpaceGodzilla, but right in line with other monsters, such as Baragon and Mothra. Ebirah's aquatic nature allows him to swim circles around his larger foes. Ebirah can dart in quickly to attack, and then swim back out of the reach of slower opponents. Ebirah's first appearance was in the 1966 movie Ebirah, Horror of the Deep.
Battra
Battra first appeared as an energy-spewing armored caterpillar that emerged from its resting place under the polar ice caps. But like all caterpillars, Battra eventually metamorphosed into a deadlier flying form. In many ways, Battra is the dark twin of Mothra, the giant moth monster.
At 239 feet long and with a wingspan of 590 feet, Battra is a formidable flying opponent. Capable of soaring high above the urban battlefield, Battra can unleash powerful twin energy beams on monsters below. Battra's first appearance was in 1992's Godzilla vs. Mothra.
