The gameplay is superb, but you'll be ready for the end long before the closing credits.

User Rating: 6.5 | X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Uncaged Edition) PS3
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is yet another game that seeks to cash in on the God of War/Devil May Cry/etc. formula. Granted while it blatantly rips off this style, it does succeed in breaking the stigma a game carries when it is based on a movie. While this game is not as polished as it could be, and it isn't quite clicking on all cylinders, the gameplay aspect is good enough to hide the rest of this game's problems.

GAMEPLAY - Those who have played God of War should feel right at home here. The regular fighting, special moves, finishers, etc. all feel like they were adapted to fit Wolverine's style. The only real unique thing about the combat is lunging, which you'll spend a lot of time doing. Basically you thrust yourself across the floor to impale and either throw or start clawing enemies to death. Once you've mastered it, the combat is very fast-paced and fun. Some enemies will block your thrusting, and this can sometimes slow down the pace, but it is a decent attempt at making things more difficult. Unfortunately this game really doesn't seem difficult at all, and will probably only pose any sort of obstacle on hard mode. In addition to combat, you also have this feral vision that is very similar to detective mode in Batman: Arkham Asylum. It serves as more of a way to keep you going in the right direction more than anything else, but it isn't as useful as the one in AA. Overall though, this game has some great combat, some enjoyable boss fights, and leveling up can be a lot of fun also. - 8/10

STORY - Unless you've seen the movie, you might feel a little lost here. This game goes between two points in Wolverine's life, with the later one covering most of the movie. Unfortunately a lot of the major fight scenes of the movie are entirely WAY too strung out. Escaping the facility where Wolverine receives his adamanteum skeleton and the fight with Gambit last over an hour alone, each. This game is all about the journey, but sadly it is a very monotonous and boring one. At least in games like God of War and Dante's Inferno you were actually entertained all the way through. - 5.5/10

GRAPHICS - The graphics are very substandard for the PS3, but for good reason. This was a game released on a variety of systems, both of this generation and last generation. On the Wii or the PS2, this game would look pretty awesome. Unfortunately on the PS3 and 360 it definitely looks dated. Since I'm grading this on the PS3, I will give it a score based on what the system offers. - 6/10

SOUND - Hugh Jackman is here, but I'm not sure about the other actors from the movies. Overall the music wasn't all that interesting to me. This was one of those games that I just muted and played my own music to, honestly. It was okay, but nothing outstanding. - 7/10

LENGTH/REPLAY VALUE - Obviously if you all of the trophies, you may find yourself playing through more than once. I couldn't see myself doing so though. There are just far too many uninteresting parts to this game, and while the combat certainly does keep you going, there just isn't a whole lot going on here. - 6/10

BOTTOM LINE - Wolverine is definitely a game you should play if you enjoyed God of War, Dante's Inferno, or are just a fan of the superhero you're playing as. The gameplay is solid, but only because it was taken from games that mastered the idea. Everything else about this game is lacking, except for maybe the sound. But again, this wasn't good enough for me to keep the volume on. Unless you are interested in this game because of one of the reasons stated here, I would avoid it. If not for the tried-and-true combat, this would be just another bad movie game. - 6.5/10
