Brilliant!

User Rating: 8.8 | X-Men Legends PS2
This game is to the X-Men, as Army Men RTS was for - er, Army Men.

Its the perfect style of game for this particular franchise. Never before has an X-Men game so perfectly captured the team-based feel of the comic franchise. Well, except maybe for that awesome classic arcade game, but that is a different story! The game combines near perfect gameplay with great depth, character development, compelling villians, and a fantastically-written story. Although you only start out with a handful of X-Men to choose from, the game manages to give you each new character at the perfect times, just when you wanted something to shake things up a bit. And best of all, all the characters feel unique enough to warrant giving them all plenty of play time. Granted, many of them fit into various archetypes. Wolverine and Colossus are the tank/brawlers, Cyclops and Gambit are ranged fighters, Iceman and Jean Grey are the status/support characters (building bridges and whatnot), and so on. But each character seems to have abilities and powers that perfectly fit in with the character, and each has his or her own unique uses. Iceman can build ice bridges, and Jean Grey can create telekenetic ones, but aside from that one similarity, each character plays totally different. Iceman can also extinguish fires that may block your path, but Storm can use tornadoes to do that too. Psyloche and Jubilee both have powers that can stun or confuse enemies. In fact, Nightcrawler is the only totally unique character, with his ability to teleport and take advantage of all the shortcuts you can think of. But even though some characters may feel similar in some respects, they feel much different in other respects. And none of them ever feels redundant. And the story is cool. Most of it is told through the eyes of a new recruit on the team (who will become a playable character named Magma later on in the game). She gets to explore the X-Mansion and chat with and get to know various X-Men. And then she gets to watch their missions as part of her training. The game also gives you plenty to do. There are various "Danger Room Discs" that can be found around the various levels that let you play training missions that can give you characters valuable experience and provide you with unique and often fun gameplay challenges. There are also several flashback sequences in which certain characters (like Nightcrawler and Jubilee) share experiences of their earlies missions with Magma (these missions being fully playable and giving you experience to boot!).

X-Men Legends is a great idea that turned out to be a fantastic game, and is easily one of the best super-hero games ever made, if not THE best.
