Choice is an Illusion

This game took me by surprise. I don't mean that I was surprised at how it was made or how it was played. I mean I didn't even know it was coming out. I am a rabid X-Men fan so I am pretty aware of all things, X-Men. In fact, I had to go and look specifically for information about the game and found little. Now that I have played it, I am sad to say that I now know why. It's not that great. It's not even good. The graphics are horrible. In all your close ups, your character looks like he has a skin disease. I am wondering if that is why they chose to cover the girl character's face with that scarf. INVISIBLE WALLS! The bane of my existence. I hate them and this game is so full of them, that's what they should have named the game: "Illusory Choice in the World of Invisible Walls". Although initially it seems that there might be lots of nooks and crannies for you to explore, you can't go into any of them. Even an open doorway is likely to be blocked by an invisible wall. All the powers are boring (I played through 3 times to try them all). I would have liked to have just chosen a particular X-Man than to create my own and have their powers be so boring. The game controls are sluggish. You can mash away but the buttons will only respond about 75 to 85 percent of the time. The story is weak, linear, and full of holes. The dialogue is awkward and clumsy and the inflections don't fit what they are trying to say. I feel bad for the voice talent because it sounds like they were given a lot of lines to record without any real understanding of their context. Your characters run into the same superheroes over and over and yet late in the game he seems surprised to "meet" them. Even the New Game + process is weird and confusing and you can't change powers for the next playthrough. The one good thing I can say about this game is that it was a good try. It is better than Marvel Ultimate Alliance II, even with all it's faults. It is obvious that Activision is still searching for a good fit developer for the beat 'em up/ RPG genre. Silicon Knights fumbled this one. I'm thinking maybe they should go back to the old format and let Raven develop the next one. And put Havok in it!
