THQ's WWF Royal Rumble builds upon the fast action gameplay of THQ's PlayStation wrestling game, WWF SmackDown. Will the power of the Dreamcast bring the attitude of the WWF to life?
WWF Royal Rumble is being developed by Yukes, the same company that put together the critically acclaimed WWF SmackDown! for the PlayStation. The game plays a great deal like SmackDown, though right now, the controls seem a little less frantic.
The most impressive thing about Royal Rumble is how it effortlessly places up to six wrestlers on-screen at once, along with a referee. By the time the game is completed, THQ hopes that the game will be able to accommodate nine wrestlers at once. The game also shares SmackDown's out of the ring action, featuring parking lots (complete with moving cars) and other backstage areas.
So far, Royal Rumble looks like it's shaping up to be a pretty solid wrestling game, with double team moves and lots of different possibilities. The list of modes isn't firm, but it's a safe bet that most of the modes found in SmackDown! will return, and maybe a few new modes will slip in, as well. It hasn't been decided yet if the game will contain actual wrestler voice in its story mode, but hopefully that's something that THQ will be able to slip in before the game is released.
