Mayhem by name, Lacklusture by nature.

Worms has always worked best in 2D, and that is really where is should have remained.

The Mayhem of Worms is quickly toned down by the extra space, usually with all of a 30 second time taken moving very slowly around the map, never mind firing. This means rather than progressing quickly, single matches may be stretched into the 30 minute zone, not really a good thing for Worms at all. The worms themselves may look better than ever before, but very detail-less grpahics and sometimes glitchy environments mean that certain missions are doomed from the start. Nowhere does this show more clearly than in Story Mode, unfortunately the main mode of the entire game.

The difficulty levels swing about like a feather in a hurricane. Even the same mission can differ wildly, with enemy worms simply either missing or hitting every time with no in-betweens at all. Inconsistent is only a mild description.

Multiplayer mode is still great with the roulette machine, literally hundereds of varied maps available and a rather nice selection of weopans. The game even speeds up with other players playing rather than the clunky CPU characters and along with a real competeitive streak between players, this really does become a great game. But then there is of course the flip-side of the story.

Explosions always feel dampened down with very little feel to them other than a satisfying rumble. The camera veers around wildly, needing constant player correction to make another horrible jump across a ravine. This is where the Worms are at their worst.

Worms have never done platforming. Take a worm aside for a moment. Apart from a signiture bazooka in its cold slimy hands it has nothing, not even legs. Then why should Worm be suddenly be thrust into the world of precarious ledges, rickety bridges, rubble and falling scenery? With worms jumping uncontrolably and unpredictably it makes any simple navigational problem a tedious mastermind task which cannot be solved other than by re-writing the game.

By the way, that is precisely what should have been done before this ever saw the light of day.
