Addictive and very challenging sci-fi racing game.
The Wipeout HD campaign has about 80 events to compete, which consist from normal lap races, time trials, speed laps or zones. Zone is a unique racing mode where you take control of a special craft which accelerates as you drive further, you cannot brake or decrease your speed at all and the track loops into infinity, so it's kinda like a survival mode which at some point becomes so fast that you simply must crash, but doing well at those rapid speeds is truly thrilling.
Make no mistake Wipeout HD is hard, even on easy, and I don't recommend it to anyone that isn't willing to race over and over on these 8 tricky tracks. To win you will have to master every single corner and nail everything just right because every seconds counts. Racing in regular lap races against the AI can be particularly hard because weapons such as rockers or shields are available as well, so those matches often turn out to be quite random and chaotic. Racing online is a great way to see just how good you have, or have yet to become.
The game does a well job of increasing the speed as you play and win events, so you will start out at a very timid speed where you can get to learn the track and adjust to your vehicles and air brakes before the true challenge starts off. To make things easier, a balanced pilot assist option is available, it's a system which will automatically steer you away from walls if you happen to get too close, but at a price of reducing your speed by 10% or so, which can sometimes prove to be fatal in the long run, especially on the hardest and fastest events.
