How do you play 2 player on line?

How and if so can you play 2 or more players from the on ps3 online at any point. my friends come over and we like to play online but cant unless they are on thier own ps3 with this game.

I realize this question is old and you probably figured out the answer by now, but unfortunately you can't play local and online at the same time. It's a shame.
