The best Wild Arms 3 mod you'll ever play.

User Rating: 7.5 | Wild Arms Alter Code: F PS2
Released two years ago this month in Japan, Wild Arms: Alter Code F after much trial and tribulation has finally made its way over to American shores.

In case you've never heard of this game it is a Playstation 2 re-make of the Playstation 1 RPG Wild Arms. Most people haven't had the chance to experience the first game in the series since it was released just a couple months ahead of Final Fantasy 7 and was sort of eclipsed by it.

What I mean by saying this is the best Wild Arms 3 mod you'll ever play is that Alter Code F borrows a lot from the other Playstation 2 Wild Arms game, Wild Arms: Advanced 3rd. And when I mean a lot, I mean A LOT. We're talking monsters, graphics, animations, systems, spells, and even music.

The story of the original game takes place on in the world of Filgaia. A desolate decaying wasteland in which the people struggle to survive. In this world three people come together on a common quest to save their planet from mechanical demons. You've got a magic using tomboy princess, a sword carrying treasure hunter [complete with wisecracking animal sidekick], and the mute, blue haired, gun-toting protagonist. While the cast just screams original, the storyline itself unfolds and ends up being one of the best you'll ever experience.

Grapically, this game isn't anything special. Its more or less Wild Arms 3 without the cell-shaded graphics. The world map looks terrific and it is absolutely HUGE. The graphics aren't ugly by any means, they just are nowhere near what the PS2 is capable of.

Musically, this game owns you. This game has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. So much so that I bought the damn thing. Some of its music is completely original, while most of it is remixed versions of the orignal PSOne soundtrack. Only a couple tracks are borrowed from WA3. Either way its all beautiful and you'll find yourself taking your time in areas or just standing still just to listen to the music. Rarely does a videogame have the kind of soundtrack that goes with you once you turn off the system. Get one of these tunes stuck in your head, and it will be there all day long.

Mechanically, this is game is old-school turn based combat. Each character has their own unique set of skills and abilities. There aren't weapons or armor in the game, character level ups take care of all of that. What you can equip your character with are "Skills" these are either bought or found and each one requires a different set of points to equip to your character. Each character has the same amount of points that they are in levels.

So a level 10 character has 10 skill points. These skills range from various levels of resistence against abnormal status effects and elemental damage, to special abilities such as restoring MP with each step and being able to attack from the back row in combat.

In the original game you had just the three main characters, in this one there are other characters that temporarily join your group and can be used in combat that couldn't be in the original. You can switch your characters around at the beginning of each turn during combat an those on the back row will regain lost HP instead of acting [unless one of them has that aforementioned skill]

Alright now for the super happy best bonus stuff. I'm not going to spoil anything in particular but I'll just say this. Wild Arms: Alter Code F has A LOT of **** you can do. Like extra dungeons? How about a non-stop 100 floor trek that will end with the hardest boss in game. Like Puzzles? How about 30 hidden puzzle dungeons. Hidden bosses? This game has about 20! Fighting Arenas? Got one of those as well. and secret characters? We've got not one, not two, but three! Three Hidden Characters! HA..HA..HA.. Not to mention there are 25 extremely hard to get Keys that unlock more bonus features after you've beaten the game.

Rockman fully recommends this game to any old-school RPG fan. Especially if you've never played a Wild Arms game before.
